With Benue, is APC about to overtake NPN?

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J By Tonnie Iredia Nigerians below age 30 are obviously not old enough to know about the wonderful ruling party of the second republic known as the National Party of Nigeria (NPN). The elderly may also have forgotten much of the exploits of that party. But it has been the most miraculous of Nigeria’s political parties more notoriously famous than the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that could not manage its ‘victories’ at the polls. Apart from the 12-two-third strategy by which the departing military administration packaged the NPN to power, the party had two other unforgettable political “achievements”.  First, its candidates at any election were declared winners in centres where voting did not even hold. Second, in several states ‘captured’ by the party during the 1983 governorship elections, results were announced even before the then Federal Electoral Commission (FEDECO) could conclude the counting of votes cast during the same election. Both FEDECO and t...

Away with loneliness

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J By Funmi Komolafe Welcome to a new week. This week, the Lord will surprise you in Jesus name. Brethren, today we are taking a look at loneliness especially for sisters and brothers   that are of marriageable age but not married. Many a times we tend to over estimate the effects of loneliness in a person’s life.   Simply put, loneliness is described as “ the state of being alone in solitary isolation”. Lonely as an adjective is “lack of companions or companionship”. It could lead to depression if not properly managed. However, one can be in the midst of many people and still be lonely.  In other words, the one who is lonely has no friend.   He or she has no confidant.  No one to trust.  No one to share his or her thoughts with. Some children who live with their parents are still lonely. Why?  How? Parents have become too busy to share the thoughts of their children.   So, parents need to find time to a...

Do Whistle Blowers’ Victims Still Have Any’ Friends Left?!

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J By Bunmi Sofola No matter what your reaction is to the spate of the public display of soiled linen of some fallen public officials and socialites by the powers-that-be; the fact remains that the victims’ feelings are seldom given any serious thoughts by the public. What is it like to lose face, not to mention your friends and fortune in such a spectacular manner? Years back, Geoffrey and his wife had a fantastic life with houses in choice areas all over the country and a couple of homes abroad. They held splendid parties and were the toast of soft-sell magazines. Then things went horribly wrong. Geoffrey was linked to a sophisticated network of drugs and fraud, popularly tagged 419 and the bubble burst. Some of the property were confiscated and went up for sale as he was clamped into prison abroad.  His wife could no longer pay salaries of staff and domestic staff had to go. Even more bruising, scathing articles in papers that once celebrated the couple re...

Solution to N-Delta crisis goes beyond Amnesty funding —Rep

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J By Jeremiah Urowayino The member representing Warri Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mr. Daniel Reyenieju, has advised those thinking that the reported recent increment in the budgetary allocation to the Amnesty Programme in the Niger Delta was all that was needed to arrest the multi-dimensional crises afflicting the region, to have a rethink. Speaking to Vanguard at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, yesterday, the lawmaker cautioned those he described as agents of misinformation and enemies of the region to endeavour to grasp the causal factors of the Niger Delta crises, particularly those that border on alienation, lack of infrastructure, unemployment and the situation where oil companies site their administrative and operational headquarters outside the areas of their operations. Reyenieju said: “The number of youths benefiting from the ongoing amnesty programme remains infinitesimal when compared to the totality of the yo...

They destroyed all the crops, the source of our wealth: Cassava, cocoa plantain…—Villagers

Image
http://ift.tt/2rpGkv5 •Power struggle over Calabar–North superhighway When bulldozers rolled into their forest at the start of last year, the Ekuri community in south-east Nigeria protested: “Indigenes say no!” They didn’t want a superhighway that would wipe their ancestral lands in the Cross River National Park off the map. Under pressure, the earthmovers left to do their work elsewhere. But community spokesman Martin Egot said: “They destroyed all the crops, the source of our wealth: cassava, cocoa, plantain… .” The 800-billion-naira ($2.6-billion, 2.3-billion-euro) highway project, launched in 2015, is huge. It envisages six lanes, 260 kilometres (162.5 miles) long linking the regional capital Calabar and a new deep water port with Benue State to the north. ‘Ecological disaster’ At nearly 4,000 square kilometres (1,500 square miles), the Cross River National Park is the biggest forest in Nigeria, a paradise of endangered gorillas, elephants and other species. In Africa’s m...
