Image

Naira appreciates to N374/$

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J By Babajide Komolafe The naira Thursday appreciated to N374 per dollar in the parallel market due to weak demand for dollars. Vanguard survey revealed that the parallel market exchange rate dropped from N375 per dollar on Wednesday to N374 per dollar at the close of business yesterday. Parallel market operators attributed the appreciation to weak demand for dollars which occasioned dollar glut in the market.  Investigations revealed that the dollar glut was occasioned by the long holiday and the regular sale of dollars to bureaux de change (BDCs) by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The apex bank since April has been selling $40,000 to each of the over 3000 BDCs in the country.     The post Naira appreciates to N374/$ appeared first on Vanguard News . Members of the the Club made their position known on the issue during at 2017 Annual General Meeting held in Umuahia. According to the President of the Club, Chief Nnanna Achiugo, “the club supports the position of the chairman of South East Senate Caucus, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe who opposed the plans to exclude the South East region from rail projects of the Federal Government”. But they also pledged to defend the agreement and not to backtrack in the fight against climate change. Jean-Claude Juncker, head of the European Union’s executive Commission, lashed Trump’s decision as “seriously wrong.” The body’s commissioner for climate action and energy Miguel Arias Canete pledged continued “global leadership” on climate change. “The EU deeply regrets the unilateral decision by the Trump administration,” he said in a statement. “The Paris Agreement will endure. The world can continue to count on Europe for global leadership in the fight against climate change. “Europe will lead through ambitious climate pol...

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Full Text of Book Review on the Occasion of the Public Presentation of “The Vanity of ‘Change’ and the Audacity of Truth (A Collection of Uncompromising Essays)” Authored by Mr Jude C. Ndukwe, on Wednesday, 24 th  of May, 2017, at Merit House, Aguiyi Ironsi St, Maitama, Abuja. I feel deeply honoured and privileged to stand before this special gathering on the presentation of ‘The Vanity Of Change and the Audacity of Truth’ a book authored by one of the rising champions of democracy in Nigeria today. My speech will be a departure from the typical book reviews in these parts. I will not spend so much time talking about the book as I will talk about the importance of the role people like Jude Ndukwe play in tumultuous societies such as Nigeria. I met Jude Ndukwe, long before I met him in person. As a matter of fact, I met Jude in person, interacted with him a number of times without knowing he was the fearless Jude Ndukwe who wrote articles that rattled m...

Obama slams Trump for exiting Paris climate deal

Image
http://ift.tt/2rvIzNn Barack Obama./ AFP Barack Obama slammed his successor President Donald Trump on Thursday for pulling out of the Paris climate deal, warning that the move would see the United States “reject the future.” “The nations that remain in the Paris Agreement will be the nations that reap the benefits in jobs and industries created,” Obama warned in a statement. “Even in the absence of American leadership; even as this administration joins a small handful of nations that reject the future; I’m confident that our states, cities, and businesses will step up and do even more to lead the way, and help protect for future generations the one planet we’ve got,” he added. Before leaving office, Obama helped shepherd the landmark international pact that commits all signatory nations to limiting global warming caused by carbon emissions. “It was bold American ambition that encouraged dozens of other nations to set their sights higher as well,” Obama said. “And what mad...

Champions League final: Juventus take on Real Madrid to end a 21-year itch

Image
http://ift.tt/2rK14hT May 22, 1996. Stadio Olimpico, Rome. Vladimir Jugovic stops for a brief moment at the end of his run. Between the Serbian defender and Champions League glory stands one man – Ajax goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar. Jugovic rises on his toes, like a gymnast addressing the vault, and takes a breath. Van der Sar guesses correctly but Jugovic strikes the ball too well. Juventus players collapse in tears on the turf. The Old Lady are European champions. It was Juve’s first European Cup triumph in 11 years. Back then, that was considered a lengthy wait. But now their patience is really being tested. Twenty-one years have passed without a repeat. Those famous black and white stripes will flood Cardiff this weekend, hoping to finally give a two-decade old itch a ruddy great scratch. Juventus’s most recent triumph on the continent’s biggest stage belongs to a totally different era, after all. It pre-dates the Euro, it pre-dates the iPhone, it pre-dates Twitter, Faceboo...
