Alleged forex infractions: experts want indicted banks to finish punishment

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J By Chinyere Joel-Nwokeoma – Some financial experts on Thursday urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to ensure the 14 banks banned to see through their punishment. The experts, who spoke in Lagos, said that the ban would curb banks’ excesses, round-tripping, inflation and the continuous depreciation of the nation’s currency. Prof. Sheriffadeen Tella, Prof. of Economics, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, in Ogun said the ban would check activities of banks if the CBN could ensure they go through the punishment. Tella said most of the banks had been involved in round-tripping because they get forex from CBN and resell same to the black market. He said that the action was responsible for the rapid depreciation of the Naira, capital flight and inflation. “If some banks are banned and seen to have been properly punished, others will be careful,” Tella said. Dr Uche Uwaleke, the Head of Banking and Finance Department, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, desc...

US tests intercontinental ballistic missile

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The US Air Force test-launched an unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile from California early Wednesday, the military said. Air Force Global Strike Command spokesman Joe Thomas told AFP from California that the test was routine and not meant to be a show of force in the standoff with North Korea over its nuclear and ballistic missile program. The Minuteman III missile blasted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base at 0702 GMT, the strike command said in a statement. The missile traveled some 4,200 miles (6,700 km) and went down near a Pacific Ocean atoll that is part of the Marshall Islands and features a US military ballistic missile test site. The Minuteman III, capable of being fitted with a nuclear warhead, is tested like this about four times a year, said Linda Frost, also a spokeswoman for the strike command. Air forces photos of the launch show bright, roaring flames at the moment of liftoff, then a pale, slender, orange trail against the night sky as...

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Eight migrants, five of them children, have died of thirst in the Niger desert while making their way to Algeria, a key destination for would-be migrants to Europe, a security source told AFP. “These migrants died of thirst on the way to Algeria,” the source, who asked not to be identified, said late Tuesday. The group, a man, a woman and five children aged between six and 12, “were abandoned by a smuggler” and “all died of thirst”, he added. Online news site Air-info, which is based in northern Niger, said the eight were part of a larger group headed for Algeria, and that four men who had been rescued were found “completely dehydrated”. Last June the bodies of 34 migrants were found in the desert, while in late 2013 a group of 92 Niger citizens, including many women and children, also died of thirst after being abandoned by smugglers. Several thousand Niger citizens living illegally in Algeria have been expelled since 2015 following a deal between the govern...
