http://ift.tt/2oZMIY9 President Muhammadu Buhari Once again, in their demonstration of unwavering tenacity and cautious optimism, Nigerians have joined public office holders, the ruling party and friends of the country in congratulating President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration as it marks its second anniversary today. This administration has weathered the storm of pessimism, vacillation and inertia, on its democratic journey to achieve some definable goals. As always, regime landmarks like this afford Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on and frankly evaluate the first half of the Buhari administration. But rather than being celebrated as a day to reel out modest achievements of the administration, today should remind Nigerians of the problems that have befallen the country, and how they can be resolved. Nigerians should reflect on the needed re-organisation of various national institutions so that the country can move forward. Since the inception of this political dispensati...

A poetic reconnaissance of the Niger-Delta in Benji Egede’s songs of fuellessness and testament of hope Part 2

http://ift.tt/2qvoPVK This seemingly endless strain of melancholy continues in “A Note to Nkunlunkulu” as Egede solicits God’s intervention for a dissipation of the cruelty and startling problems crushing the entire region of the Niger Delta.“A Note to Nkunlunkulu”, conveys his appalling art imaged in ‘Nkunlunkulu’, a Zulu name for God, who is able to save and deliver the entire region or land from the aching problems. The poem captures God’s greatness and power to deliver the oppressed. Of course, the problems of the region erode the people’s confidence in the nation’s leadership, and as such, under this circumstance, Egede must fulfill his role as a chronicler and watchdog of his region by raising an alarm to the one who can deliver absolutely. In this poem, Egede employs symbols and images that capture leaders that are tyrants and cannibals who have re-incarnated in the persons of ‘the Does and the Barres’, the Amins and the Abachas’. These terrifying imagistic symbols ignite ter...

http://ift.tt/2nQvhKt Ernest Onuoha “Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. And she had an Egyptian maidservant whose name was Hagar. So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the Lord has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai,” (Gen 16:1-2) It is to be noted that God honours His Words more than His name. Accordingly, the scripture could afford to say: “God is not man, that He should lie or a son of man, that He should change His mind. Has He said and will He not do it? Or has He spoken and will He not fulfil it?” (Num. 23: 19). In the conversation that followed, we saw Abram bending backwards, as if God will not fulfil His promise unto him. Recall, Life Application Study Bible says that God promised to bless Abram and make him great, but there was one condition. Abram had to do what God wanted him to do. This meant leaving his home and friends and travelling to a new land, w...
Mother tongue… Lagos lawmakers set learning pace for school children

http://ift.tt/2pGUrsR Lagos Assembly Over the years, scholars have stressed the importance of mother tongue, noting that it is imperative for a child’s development and grasping of the basic elements of teaching and learning. International organisations like UNESCO, and especially UN General Assembly’s Convention on Child’s Rights have stressed the need to educate children, at least, at primary level using mother tongue as medium of instruction. It argues that researches have shown that mother tongue-based schooling significantly improves learning. This informed Lagos State lawmaker’s resolve to pass into law the bill mandating the use of mother tongue into the state’s education system. This was the concern of the lawmakers at their recent plenary. The lawmakers, who submitted that indigenous language would serve as a yardstick to promote the African culture, also noted that it would bring development. The plenary session witnessed the second reading of the bill seeking to promote...

http://ift.tt/2r0xO4I Lazarus Muoka Text: Matthew 16:18 “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Ephesians 5:26-27 “That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.” There are so many other people who could not find their feet, they could not breakthrough on their own effort, no matter how much they tried, or struggled. Their breakthrough came as soon as they allowed the Lord to build them. Today, the Lord is telling you to follow me and I will make you fishers of men. I will make you that which I want you to be. Revelation 4:11 “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” I want you to understand my ...

http://ift.tt/2rqWyos Peter Odili Former governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Odili, has called for an end to political bickering and antagonism against Governor Nyesom Wike. Odili said Rivers State deserves peace and stability to ensure its sustained socio-economic growth and development. Odili, speaking in Port Harcourt, while commissioning the multimillion-naira Pleasure Park, built by Wike’s administration at Rumuola, as part of events marking the 50th anniversary of the creation of the state, said Rivers State people and those who supported Wike to emerge as governor did so out of conviction that he was the most suitable person to administer the state at this point in time. “I appeal to our elders, political leaders… We are no longer united, as we should be. Power comes from God. God has given us Wike, let all divisive factions and factors, tow the path and stand behind our governor. Let us give him total support,” he said. Odili observed that the park, which occupies 1...

http://ift.tt/2s0db7u Principal of Ijaw National Academy, Charles Johnson When Governor Henry Seriake Dickson took over as the governor of Bayelsa State in 2012, a time when the state was the hotbed of militants, his first move was to declare a state of emergency on education as result of poor state of primary and secondary schools in the state. Today, that decision has led to massive construction of schools equipped with what can rightly be tagged state of the art facilities that symbolises the Governor’ restoration agenda in the education sector. One of such projects is the Ijaw National Academy, a co-educational institution established two years ago to provide good quality education for children of Bayelsa State from all strata of life. The vision and philosophy behind the initiative is to expose teenage Bayelsans to Western form of education early in life, so that when they grow into adulthood, they would be insulated from influences that can lead them into militancy and all ...
