U-20 World Cup: England, Venezuela book tickets to maiden finals

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Dominic Solanke struck twice as England beat Italy 3-1 to reach the Under-20 World Cup final for the first time in their history on Thursday.     Liverpool-bound Solanke cancelled out Riccardo Orsolini’s early opener when he scored in the 66th minute, before Everton’s Ademola Lookman put England 2-1 up 11 minutes later. With two minutes left, Solanke buried a glorious strike from distance to confirm England’s place in Sunday’s final against Venezuela, who edged Uruguay on penalties. Neither side has reached the final before and for England, it will be first time they have played a World Cup decider since their 1966 victory in the senior edition. Solanke and Lookman have been two of the stand-outs for England, who arrived without a victory in the tournament since 1997 — when Michael Owen scored in a 1-0 win over Mexico. In South Korea, the Young Lions beat Argentina and their Korean hosts in the group stage before knocking out Costa Rica and Mexico ...

Court orders arrest of former Plateau Assembly speaker John Dabwan

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J A Jos High Court on Monday issued a bench warrant for the arrest of a former Speaker of Plateau House of Assembly, Mr John Dabwan. Justice Felomina Lot gave the order after revoking bail he granted Dabwan in a case of issuance of a dud cheque in the sum of N3.8 million. The former speaker allegedly issued the cheque to a Jos-based businessman, Mr Theophilus Omhagie. “The accused was granted bail in this case based on self-recognition, but he has failed to show up or send any representative. “His refusal to come to court in this matter goes to show that the accused has no respect or regard for the court; it is indeed a slap on this honourable court. “I hereby revoke the bail earlier granted to him and order for his immediate arrest and hand over to the nearest police station,’’ Lot said. The prosecution had submitted that  Omhagie offered services to Dabwan in 2016. Prosecution counsel, Mr E. A. Inbgbenoine, told the court that Dabwan issued a Sterling B...

‘Alternative platforms will affect PDP at Lagos council polls’

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The Chairman of a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Mr Segun Adewale (Aeroland) has called on party members to cast their differences aside and unite to give the party a strong showing in the July 22 council poll. Adewale, aligned to the Senator Ali Modu Sheriff national leadership, made the call on Thursday while addressing a crowd of party supporters at the party secretariat in Ikeja. He urged aggrieved members of the party planning to contest the council poll in the state on an alternative platform to drop the idea as it would not bring success. According to him, it will not be in the interest of the PDP or members, if the party performs woefully in the election just because of infighting. The chairman emphasised that peace was the only option for the party to do well in the elections, urging members to aim for the success of the party, rather than pursue personal interests. “I want to urge all our members, those in our fac...
