Those who get inebriated at a young age are 47 percent more likely to die prematurely, a study found. Researchers believe early drinking may increase a person’s risk of suffering a life-threatening alcohol abuse disorder in later life. Lead author Dr Hui Hu from the University of Florida, United States, said: “Early onset of drinking and drunkenness are associated with alcohol use disorders and therefore may play a role in elevated alcohol use disorder-related mortality rates.” Other experts add excessive alcohol-consumption at a young age can increase a person’s ‘risk-taking behavior’ and lead to mental health issues. Young women who binge drink increase their risk of developing type 2 diabetes in later life, experts warned earlier this month. Drinkin...

I won’t apologise to Senate before my recall, says Ndume

Image
http://ift.tt/2sSvuLY Ndume Six months after his suspension, former Senate Leader Mohammed Ali Ndume, has vowed not to apologise as a condition for his recall. Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District, disclosed this at a meeting with his constituents in Abuja. This followed a report last week that the Senate had asked him to apologise before his suspension could be lifted. He said: “For now, there is nothing for me to apologise for. The move for apology was actually made, but I did not do anything to warrant such. Though, I have no problem with an apology, it could only be done when one has committed an offence. “The issues that I raised, including the importation of car have been put to rest. The certificate issue has also been put to rest, because I initiated them. Perhaps if I did not, they may have lingered.” Ndume was suspended for alleging that an exotic car owned by Senate President Bukola Saraki, was purchased with forged customs papers. He also all...

PHOTO: nigeriannewsservice.com The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Boboye Oyeyemi, has said the official rate required for acquiring a three years duration driver’s licence remains N6,350. Speaking in Lagos over the weekend at a capacity building seminar for journalists, Oyeyemi, who was represented by the Assistant Corps Marshal and the Zonal Commanding Officer, Lagos and Ogun, Sheu Zaki, said motorists must fight for their rights to ensure they are not over-billed. This is coming as most applicants raised concerns that the agency has made the process complicated and tedious. “The official rate of driver’s licence as set by the Joint Tax Board (JTB) is N6,350. Anything order than that is not acceptable, so people should endeavour to fight for their rights,” Oyeyemi said. The Corps Marshal said the agency has also introduced a five years duration of the licence, which could be procured for N10,350 to meet th...

Gains of struggle still unrealised, say Agbakoba, Odumakin, Uranta, others

Image
http://ift.tt/2odZJhL Olisa Agbakoba Twenty-four years after the botched June 12, 1993 presidential election, which was presumed to have been won by the presidential candidate of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP), Chief MKO Abiola, regrets still rent the air, as prominent Nigerians insist the country’s fortunes still plummet. Former President of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Olisa Agbakoba, spokesman of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, Executive Secretary, Nigerian National Summit Group, Tony Uranta, and member of the 2014 National Conference, Wale Okuniyi, yesterday, lamented that the expected results from the struggle have remained unrealised.    Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s 24th anniversary celebration, Agbakoba, who said he was not totally disappointed with the June 12 struggle because it eventually led to the exit of the military from government added, “that is not to say I am happy because the situation in the country today does not justify the risk, danger...

Again, leadership lessons from Real Madrid…

Image
http://ift.tt/2sada38 Real Madrid President; Floretino Perez As local and global politics became more complicated at the weekend, I would like to shift some focus to some equally significant success factors in the organized private sector that we often ignore. What else shall we write about local politics without ethics? The more you look at what is happening to the resurgent ‘Biafran Dream’, for instance, the less we see! Just as observers were scratching heads over what to do with the Biafra conundrum, like a bolt from the blues came a toxic quit notice to the Oriental brothers to leave the North. The notice, clearly an assault on Nigeria’s constitution has triggered a spate of other more toxic statements from other youth and elders’ organizations in the South. Unto a section of the South South, in 2018 will be born a new Republic called RONDEL, Region of Niger Delta, for instance. Nigeria is “on the brink again” on the eve of June 12 anniversary – of the day General IBB’s gover...
