Finally! Terry Gilliam finishes ‘Don Quixote’

Image
http://ift.tt/2r7MCeW Terry Gilliam Terry Gilliam, the US-born director famous for a string of dark fantasy films, has finally finished his version of Don Quixote… after 17 years battling one disaster after another. “Sorry for the long silence…,” he posted laconically to Facebook on Sunday. “After 17 years, we have completed the shoot of THE MAN WHO KILLED DON QUIXOTE. Muchas gracias to all the team and believers. QUIXOTE VIVE!” (Quixote lives!) Gilliam said he and his crew had just finished shooting in Spain. But it has been a long haul for the director of “Brazil” and “Twelve Monkeys”. Like the aging knight at the centre of Miguel de Cervantes’ classic tale, Gilliam, now 76, has had to deal with one mishap after another to complete his quest. His first tilt at adapting the 17th-century novel was with US star Johnny Depp and French actors Jean Rochefort and Vanessa Paradis. That came to grief back in 2000, hit by a string of setbacks that included torrential rain and co...

Dalung seeks better reward for journalists

Image
http://ift.tt/2nCIypQ Solomon Dalung Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung has expressed urged governments at all levels to set up a commensurate reward system for journalists in view of their roles in entrenching democracy in the country. Dalung, who bemoaned the working conditions of practicing journalists in the country, said ‎there was the need to review their pay and terms of service in appreciation of their contributions to the development of the country. Addressing State House Correspondents after he signed the condolence register in honour of the late Channels Television Reporter, Chukwuma Onuekwusi, the minister ‎described the reward system for journalists in Nigeria as fundamentally faulty. He stressed the need for legislations that would entrench what he called “a very solid reward system that will guarantee greater contributions of journalists.” He said, “Nigeria as a country does not take care of its journalists. Looking at the role they play even in entrenching ...

Dish hit with record $280 million fine for illegal robocalls

Image
http://ift.tt/2rEZeft Dish Network Corp. must pay $280 million to the U.S. and four states for using robocalls to consumers on do-not-call lists, marking what the government says is a record fine for telemarketing violations. U.S. District Judge Sue Myerscough issued the order Monday, directing the company to pay $168 million to the federal government and $84 million to California, Illinois, North Carolina and Ohio for federal law violations. An additional $28 million in fines was awarded to California, North Carolina and Ohio for violations of state law. Myerscough also prohibited the company from violating do-not-call laws going forward and imposed a 20-year plan for supervision of its telemarketing. The company disagrees with the ruling and will appeal it, a spokesman said. The U.S. and the four states sued Dish in 2009, alleging the company violated two consumer telemarketing laws by making more than 55 million illegal calls. The U.S. asked for $900 million in fines, whi...

Thrones of Ife and Lagos: Courtesy not boundaries

Image
http://ift.tt/2pDOCfG Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu Sir: I don’t enjoy sensational stories. I pass them by, many times, but I had to watch the Youtube video which showed the Oba of Lagos dismissing the greetings of his Ife counterpart with the waving of his hand only because it was forwarded to me by someone who sits on a pedestal. He wanted my humble opinion. I told him even without a knowledge of kingship rules in Yoruba land (and I may be wrong) that I felt the highly revered Oba shouldn’t have treated the Ooni that way. And, that he might have done that because the Ooni is a young man. That he didn’t look beyond the young man to see the larger-than-life office he occupies. I was able to say this, for the reason that a cursory look at the video revealed, even though palace aid and, the revered professor from University of Lagos who wrote in The Guardian to defend the Oba of Lagos opined that the greeting is an age-long tradition and the Oba only revived what has been the nor...

Anaesthetic wipes help men last five minutes longer in bedroom

Image
http://ift.tt/2qY5Urm For men who have difficulty rising to the occasion in the bedroom, scientists may have a come up with a simple solution. Anaesthetic wipes help certain men who suffer with premature ejaculation maintain an erection for an additional five minutes, a study reveals. The wipes contain the local anesthetic benzocaine, which desensitizes the penis and delays ejaculation, allowing for a longer erection. Yet, benzocaine can affect a woman’s chances of having an orgasm and may cause erectile dysfunction if the penis becomes too numb, an expert warns. Researchers from Cornell University analysed 21 men with premature ejaculation who were in monogamous heterosexual relationships. Fifteen men used the wipes, known as Preboost, while six others received a placebo wipe without benzocaine. After two months, the men in the treatment group showed significant improvement in premature ejaculation compared to those in the placebo group. They also reported greater improv...
