Igbo Quit Notice: Northern Elders Forum backs Arewa youth group

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF), on Friday expressed support to the call by the Coalition of Northern Youth Groups for Igbos to leave the region within three months. The group  according to Premium Times citing NAN, made its position known despite widespread condemnation that followed the ultimatum earlier handed by the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum. The forum expressed “disappointment” with the Northern Governors’ Forum for disowning the youth groups. Ango Abdullahi, the NEF spokesperson, told journalists in Zaria on Friday that it was hypocritical for the Igbos to continue to live in other parts of the country while agitating for Nigeria’s break up. Mr. Abdullahi said: “I am disappointed in the decision taken by Northern Governors’ Forum disowning and condemning the agitation by this young agile and progressive youth groups. “Let me ask these Northern governors, whom are they representing, are they representing spirits, ghost or people of the north? ...

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J A powerful Al-Qaeda-linked group on Friday claimed an attack on a United Nations camp that killed three peacekeepers in Kidal in Mali’s troubled north. The Group to Support Islam and Muslims, a fusion of three Malian jihadist groups with previous Al-Qaeda links, posted a statement on its Telegram channel saying it had targeted the UN base “with a set of mortar shells”, wounding soldiers and causing significant material damage, the SITE extremism monitor reported. The UN mission in Mali, MINUSMA, said earlier on Friday their Kidal camp “came under heavy rocket/mortar fire” and “a little later a position nearby was attacked” outside their base, killing three peacekeepers and wounding eight more. The Group to Support Islam and Muslims, also known as Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimeen in Arabic, is a fusion of three Malian jihadist groups with previous Al-Qaeda links formed in March. Led by the Malian jihadist Iyad Ag Ghaly, a former leader of the Ansar Dine Isl...

With flags at half-mast, the nation fell silent at 11:00am (1000 GMT) to remember the seven killed and dozens injured on Saturday night — a mourning ritual now grimly familiar after two previous terror attacks in less than three months. Police identified the third attacker as Youssef Zaghba, a 22-year-old Italian of Moroccan descent, a day after naming his accomplices as Khuram Shazad Butt, 27, a Pakistan-born Briton, and Rachid Redouane, 30, a self-described Mo...

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The Director-General, Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Sani Mashi, says the agency is prepared to partner ABIMET, an Austrian based meteorological services provider, to improve weather forecast services in Nigeria. Mashi disclosed this when the company’s team led by its Executive Assistant, Mr Christoph Neudhart, visited him in Abuja. He said that NiMet was currently faced with a number of challenges, ranging from capacity deficit to inadequacy of density of network stations. He said that NiMet currently had only 54 weather stations across the country to service the huge population and land mass, which he said were in inadequate. Pope says to create five new cardinals

Image
http://ift.tt/2qHs4x5 Pope Francis waves to the crowd from the window of the apostolic palace overlooking St Peter's square during the Regina Coeli prayer, on May 21, 2017 in Vatican. Andreas SOLARO / AFP Pope Francis said Sunday he plans to create five new cardinals from five different countries at a special ceremony next month, all of them under the age of 80. The new cardinals — from El Salvador, Laos, Mali, Spain and Sweden — will form part of an elite group within the Church. The ceremony to elevate the five, known as a consistory, will take place on June 28, the pontiff said after prayers at the Vatican. All those selected were born in the 1940s. Cardinals over the age of 80 are not able to take part in the conclaves that elect new popes. The five are Archbishop Jean Zerbo of Bamako; Archbishop of Barcelona Juan Jose Omella; the Bishop of Stockholm Anders Arborelius; Louis-Marie Ling Mangkhanekhoun, apostolic vicar of Pakse in Laos and Gregorio Rosa Chavez, auxil...
