Environmentalist calls for special funding to clean-up Niger Delta

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The national president of Environmental Management Association of Nigeria (EMAN), Dr Emmanuel Ating, has urged the Federal Government to make budgetary provision for the clean-up of the Niger Delta region. Ating made the call on Monday in Uyo while speaking on the environmental challenges in the region caused by oil and gas exploitation. “There should be a special fund set aside in the budget every year for the clean-up of the Niger Delta region. “The government should realise that the money used for the running of our economy is from oil taken from the region. “Hence, a substantial amount of that money should be ploughed back to preserve the Niger Delta environment,” Ating said. He also urged the Federal Government to strengthen the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) to enforce compliance on issues of environmental management in the country. Atings called for the expansion of NESREA laws to cover regulation of oil a...

Boy kills friend for liking girlfriend’s Facebook picture

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The son of a mafia boss’ is facing life in jail for gunning down his best pal who simply ‘liked’ a Facebook picture of his girlfriend. Victim Francesco Prestia, 19, was left dead in an olive field in Mileto, Italy, with three bullets in his chest. His killer has been named in Italian media as 15-year-old Alex Pititto, the son of ‘Ndrangheta mafia boss Salvatore Pititto, known as ‘El Tio’, or the Uncle. Pititto saw the Facebook ‘like’ as a “lack of respect”, according to local media reports. He is reported to have turned himself into police and led them to the olive grove where he had left his friend’s body. Local media reports that the teenage mobster had long suspected his friend had feelings for his girlfriend. But when he saw that Francesco had ticked the ‘like’ button for a new picture on her Facebook profile he called his friend to a meeting in a remote field and gunned him down, reports said. Ironically, he had recently posted a picture of him and his...

Demonstrations that got underway in late March have claimed the lives of 58 people, as opposition leaders seek to ramp up pressure on Venezuela's leftist president, whose already-low popularity has cratered amid ongoing shortages of food and medicines, among other economic woes. / AFP PHOTO / JUAN BARRETO Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Sunday blamed opposition demonstrators for the killing of a retired military officer and called it a hate crime. The slain 34-year-old retired National Guard lieutenant, who has yet to be identified, was beaten and shot to death by attackers Saturday night in the town of Cabudare in the western state of Lara, prosecutors said. They did not link the man’s death to the wave of sometimes violent anti-government protests that have raged for 58 straight days, with ...

‘Presidency of Nigeria belongs to the north and whether Buhari lives or dies’

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J THE RESURRECTION OF CORPSOCRACY by Fani – Kayode The day before yesterday we were told by the First Lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, that her husband was not as ill as most of us believed and that despite his obvious challenges he has continued to “carry out his responsibilities”. On the same day the media went to great lengths to convince us, without providing any pictures, that the President had resumed work and that he had had a series of fruitful and productive meetings with his Minister of Justice and the Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) respectively. They assured us that he would definately preside over the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting which was scheduled to hold the following day. All of these assertions proved to be false. Buhari has now missed his FOURTH Federal Ececutive Council meeting in a row due to his chronic and debilitating ill health. Whoever is holding this poor, frail, sick and elderly man to ranso...

Pep Guardiola’s men had to twice come from behind to earn a point at the Riverside, with the draw helping them remain fourth — the last Champions League qualifying spot on offer to English clubs — in the table, a point and a place above Manchester United. City manager Guardiola deserved to take much of the blame for an unconvincing display in the northeast, with the Spanish boss making changes that included leaving Leroy Sane and R...
