Flood kills Village Head, 5 others in Niger

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J By Wole Mosadomi The Village Head of Awuru, Mallam Abdulmumuni Mohammed, and six others were killed with livestock and properties worth millions of naira destroyed in a flood that wreaked havoc on two local government areas of Niger State. The flood, which occurred from a downpour that lasted hours on Tuesday, destroyed over 600 houses and farmlands. It was learned that a lot of people were rendered homeless and are currently taking refuge in schools and neighbouring villages. Mashegu Local Government Chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Suleiman, confirmed the incident, saying six people died while livestock and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed by the flood. Chairman of Borgu Local Government, Alhaji Shuaibu Kaboji, who also confirmed the incident in his council, said that the Village Head of Awuru was the only one who died in his local government. Bauchi records 204 cases of leprosy

The Commissioner, who disclosed this yesterday in Bauchi, said one of the challenges in the health sector of the state was the re-emergence of diseases that were previously eliminated, but resurfaced again in the state. Mukaddas said: “We have been experiencing re-emergence of some diseases we thought we have eliminated, but resurfaced and one of them is leprosy. This year alone, we recorded 17 new cases of the disease. “However, the ministry has risen to the occasion by commencing prompt treatment of the affected victims.” Speaking on the achievement of the ministry in the area of nutrition, the commissioner said that from September 2015 to date, Bauchi State was no longer in the list of the 10 affected states with cases of severe malnutrition, but that the state still recorded 50 percent of stunting ca...

Chief Magistrate A. T. Elias ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody until hearing on their bail application on June 8. The accused — Fidelis Orichi, 18, and Jeremiah Nnanna, 21— were charged with a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder. Counsel to the accused, Funmi Okoya, urged the court to grant the accused bail, arguing that they were not present at the scene of the murder. The pleas of the accused were, however, not taken by the courts for lack of jurisdiction to hear a murder case. The passage of the budget followed a motion by the Chairman, House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, Kamil Oyedele after the report of the committee on the consideration of the budget was considered and adopted at the Committee of Supply. According to a statement by the Chairman, House Committee on Information and Strategy, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, the budget, as approved has recurrent expenditure of N76,315,496,240, while capital expenditure is N70,317,250,740. The Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, had on December 21, 2016 presented a budget of N138.2 billion before the parliament for consideration. The budget was jacked up by the parliament in the course of its consideration. Gunmen kill Inspector, Sergeant in Onitsha

The incident, according to a source, occurred at 7.30p.m., when the gunmen on a motorcycle, opened fire on the policemen, who were on a stop-and-search duty at the scene of the incident located near the TRACAS Bus Stop. In a summary update made available to Vanguard , the NCDC said the outbreak was now in 23 states, with a case fatality ratio of 8 percent. The update, signed by NCDC’s Technical Assistant, Communications, Dr. Lawal Bakare, explained that in the last two weeks, a drop had been recorded in the number of cases in the most affected states, during which Kebbi and Niger states reported zero deaths.
