Feedback: Kudos to a listening govt

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J By Josef Omorotionmwan THERE  is preponderant evidence that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Administration listens to the voices of the people. As an instance, for too long, we consistently advocated the need to put seized useful contrabands to constructive uses instead of destroying them by cremation or outright burial. Subsequent past administrations paid deaf ears to our concern. There is no better way to show that the current administration has abandoned the tradition of waste than to examine a few recent cases. Early in the present democratic experiment, a large cache of sophisticated arms and ammunitions was recovered from the militants of that era, in Rivers State, when they were beating a retreat from militancy; and the recoveries were set ablaze. Yet, we kept complaining that our military and police lacked the type of weapons that we were setting ablaze to the extent that at that time, we were virtually surrendering to men of the underworld beca...

‘So much trouble in the World’

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J By Owei Lakemfa THE anniversary of Bob Marley, the Social Prophet who preached freedom, redemption, liberation, human rights, equality and revolution, was marked yesterday. It was  36 years ago, the then 36-year old Marley passed on.  He had predicted the troubles in today’s world and had tried to get humanity change course. Marley had asked  the conscientious world to ‘stir it up’   ‘Get up and stand’ for rights and basic freedom. He told those seeking to build a new world not to be distracted and  “Have no fear for atomic energy, Cause none of them can stop the time.” In his record 75 million  albums sold,  he sang that the world  leaders were like people living in the moon. In ‘So Much Trouble In The World’  he sang: “You see men sailing on their ego trip, Blast off on their spaceship, Million miles from reality: No care for you, no care for me.” Marley cautioned that inequality is a time bomb warning: “Them b...

Dangerous politics of Buhari’s health

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J I DON’T know if protocol will permit it. But it would not be a bad idea for the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, to visit President Muhammadu Buhari at the London hospital where the Nigerian president is being treated. She has a story to share. Three years before May unexpectedly became prime minister, she got a surprise. Theresa May was not feeling well and after weeks of assuming it may well be part of the misery of politics, she decided to do a medical test. Twist in the tale She was misdiagnosed at first, with the result showing that she had Type 2 diabetes. It wasn’t Type 2 diabetes, but the result of the second test was even more difficult to believe: she had Type 1 diabetes. She received the news with shock, doubt and confusion. Why was it difficult to believe? Type 1 diabetes, also described as “juvenile diabetes,” is common among much younger people (some say 40 and below), especially children. She was 57 and thought it improbable that she wou...
