Nasarawa:Principals ignore labour’s call to strike, supervise NECO exams

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J School principals in Nasarawa state on Monday ignored an earlier appeal by labour for them not to supervise the National Examination Council (NECO) in the area. The  workers in the area had embarked on strike over the failure of the state government to meet their demands. The workers had accused the government of failing to grant them annual salary increment and promotion even when they deserved it. Pensioners were also not paid their full entitlements as and when due. Mr Abdulahi Agwai, the Permanent Secretary in the state’s Ministry of Education had on May 26 announced that commissioners, permanent secretaries, principals of schools and their deputies would supervise the exam following the workers’ strike. Abdullahi Adeka, who had been removed as chairman of the union, announced the suspension of the strike, saying government had begun negotiations to meet the workers’ demands. The defendants are: Mohammed Usman (a.k.a Khalid Al-Barnawi), Mohammed Bashir Saleh, Umar Mohammed Bello (a.k.a Abu Azzan), Mohammed Salisu (a.k.a Datti), Yakubu Nuhu (a.k.a Bello Maishayi), Usman Abubakar and a lady, Halima Haliru. They are being tried on an 11-count charge, bordering on abduction and murder of their victims in February 2013. The defendants were alleged to have abducted seven foreigners from a construction site in Bauchi and took them to Sambisa Forest, in Borno, where they murdered them. Navy hands over 100 bags of seized cannabis to NDLEA

Navy Commodore Maurice Eno, who handed over the substance to the Agency, said that the suspects abandoned their two fibre boats on sighting naval men at Igbooja Village near Badagry. “The substance was packaged in 77 big bags and 23 medium bags, weighing about 4226.6kg with an estimated street value of over N40 million. “The seizure was sequel to a tip-off about some criminal elements indulging in transportation of cannabis and other illicit substances within the area through the waterways. “The suspected traffickers absconded before the navy patrol team got to the scene of the crime, as such no person was arrested,’’ said Eno, the Commander, Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT. WHO says person infected with Ebola in Congo has died

A spokesperson for the UN’s WHO Eric Kabambi, told Reuters: “It (the case) is in a very remote zone, very forested, so we are a little lucky. “We always take this very seriously”. 2 brothers to spend 42 months in prison for burglary

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J An Ijede Magistrates’ Court in Ikorodu, near Lagos has sentenced two brothers to 42 months in prison for breaking into three shops. The Chief Magistrate, R. O. Davies, told the convicts on Friday: “the two of you sound enlightened and ought not to see crime as a way out of hardship. “The two of you have pleaded guilty to the first two counts levelled against you and therefore, will face the punishment for that. “Crime is not the way out of difficult situations and cannot be excused on any ground. “Having admitted to two out of the three counts, I sentence you each to six months in prison on the first count and three years each on the second count,’’ Davies ruled. He also ordered that trial on the third count, which the convicts did not admit to, would continue as they served their sentences. WhatsApp fined 3m Euros in Italy over Facebook data sharing

WhatsApp was taken over by Facebook in 2014 and two years later, it introduced new terms of service and privacy policies that gave Facebook access to WhatsApp users’ data. Italy’s Antitrust Regulator — AGCM — said in a statement that “the opportunity for WhatsApp users to refuse the handover of data to Facebook was available `but it was inadequately flagged.” The regulator also criticised WhatsApp for introducing “unfair clauses” to its term of service, such as giving the company the right to cut off services or start charging customers without warning. 1 killed, 8 arrested in Lagos street fight
