Maleki said that the police seized four combat weapons and 112 bullets along with some explosives, adding that the police forces also found an IS flag from the militants. “One of the killed militants possessed a foreign identification card, but the identity of the three others is under investigation,’’ he said. 62 bodies recovered from Myanmar crashed military plane

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Officials say 62 of the bodies of passengers who were aboard a Myanmar military transport plane that crashed into the Andaman Sea on June 7 have been recovered. The Chinese-made Shaanxi Y-8 aircraft was carrying 122 people, mostly soldiers and their families, from the southern coast to the commercial capital of Yangon, when it went down on Wednesday. According to a post on Facebook by Myanmar Commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing on Monday said a total of 62 bodies have been pulled from the water so far. In a post at the weekend, the army chief said there had been a “very big cloud’’ at the time of the crash. No official cause has been announced. Several countries, including China, have offered to assist Myanmar, but state media said on Sunday they had been rejected. The country has a notoriously poor aviation safety record. The last crash involving a military aircraft was in February 2016. Five people were killed when a plane went down outside Naypyitaw, the...

Norway to ban full-face Muslim veil in all schools

Image
http://ift.tt/2st7F04 The Norwegian government on Monday proposed a bill to ban the full-face Muslim veil in all schools, from nurseries to universities, saying it hinders communication between students and teachers. Norway’s ruling coalition of conservative and anti-immigration rightwing parties had promised the ban last year, targeting the full-face veil called the niqab as well as burqas, balaclavas and masks. “We do not want clothes covering the face in nurseries, schools and universities,” Minister of Education and Research Torbjorn Roe Isaksen said in a statement. “These clothes prevent good communication, which is important for students to receive a good education,” he added. Norwegian authorities will consult over the coming months with those who could be affected by the draft law. Norwegian media reported the government can count on the support of most parties, saying the bill was expected to pass in the spring of 2018. Local authorities in Norway already have the power...

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The Veterinary Association of Nigeria, Ebonyi State Chapter, says it will embark on a statewide campaign aimed at regulating the sale of veterinary drugs. The association also said it would use the opportunity offered by the campaign to find solutions to treatment failure in domestic animals. The Chairman of the association, Dr Nwenyi Okoro, told newsmen in Abakaliki on Monday that the enlightenment campaign should help relevant actors in the sector administer drugs more appropriately. Okoro said the campaign would involve relevant stakeholders, including pharmacists, veterinary drug vendors, representatives of poultry farmers and officials from the state Ministry of Agriculture. The chairman said the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) would be fully represented to oversee the programme and share experiences in drug administration. He said incidences of drug resistance had become worrisome, adding that efforts needed to be m...

Three peacekeepers killed in northern Mali attack

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Three United Nations peacekeepers were killed and eight others wounded when they came under sustained attack in Kidal in Mali’s troubled north, the UN said Friday. The camp “came under heavy rocket/mortar fire” on Thursday and “a little later a position nearby was attacked” outside the base, the UN mission in Mali, MINUSMA, said in a statement. The attack is just the latest to target the 12,000-strong force in the west African nation. Guinean and Chadian soldiers make the majority of those at the Kidal camp. MINUSMA began work in Mali in 2013, providing security and assisting Malian troops struggling to keep the country safe, but has been targeted constantly by jihadists, with dozens of peacekeepers killed. Northern Mali fell to jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda in March 2012, and although these forces were driven out of key towns by a French-led military intervention the following year, the Islamists have now spread further south. The post Three peacekeeper...

“No work, no pay,” Nasarawa State tells striking workers

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The Nasarawa State Government has invoked the `no work no pay’ policy on striking public sector workers, the state Head of Service, Mr Thomas Ogiri, announced on Thursday. Ogiri said in a statement issued in Lafia that the action was in line with the labour law which stipulated that worker on strike would not be entitled to wages or remuneration throughout the period of the strike. The official, however, assured that civil servants not participating in the ongoing strike would be paid their salaries. The government directed all Permanent Secretaries and Accounting Officers of Ministries, Departments and Agencies to undertake table payment for May 2017 salaries to “deserving staff.” Reacting to the order, Ahmed Naibi, Secretary of the state chapter of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said the government had no right to take the action. According to him, the no work no pay policy applies only if workers abscond from duty for no good reason. The NLC scribe stresse...

Manchester attacker bought most bomb parts himself: UK police

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Manchester suicide bomber Salman Abedi likely purchased most of the key bomb components himself and many of his actions were carried out alone, British police investigating the attack said. Officers in the northern English city have arrested 16 people since the attack in a packed concert hall killed 22 children and adults and injured 116 others on May 22. Russ Jackson, head of the North West Countre Terrorism Unit said: “our enquiries show Abedi himself made most of the purchases of the core components and what is becoming apparent is that many of his movements and actions have been carried out alone during the four days from him landing in the country and committing this awful attack.” Police have been probing Abedi’s last movements by delving into his phone calls and watching his movements on closed-circuit television. “We have also have a good understanding of the likely component parts of the bomb and where these came from,” said Jackson. Officers were st...

Image
http://ift.tt/2rsNPBu US President Donald Trump (R) shakes hands with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a welcome ceremony upon his arrival at Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv on May 22, 2017, as part of his first trip overseas. / AFP PHOTO / MANDEL NGAN US President Donald Trump arrived in Israel on Monday to seek ways to achieve Israeli-Palestinian peace, a goal that has eluded his predecessors but which he says could be easier than “people have thought”. Trump’s visit is part of his first trip abroad as president and follows an initial stop in Saudi Arabia, where he urged Islamic leaders to confront extremism. It also comes as he contends with a raft of problems back home, including a special counsel investigating whether his associates colluded with Russia. Security was extremely tight, with Israeli police deploying some 10,000 officers. The alleys and passageways of Jerusalem’s ancient Old City, which Trump will visit later in the day, were ...
