http://ift.tt/eA8V8J THE testy relationship between the Senate and the Presidency was tried once again last week when a newly-appointed Director-General of the National Lottery Commission, Mr Lanre Gbajabiamila, started functioning without first being confirmed by the Senate. Section 8(1) of the National Lottery Act stipulates that the D-G’s appointment is subject to the confirmation of the Senate, meaning that without  confirmation, the appointment will not be constitutionally valid. Senator Dino Melaye had brought the issue before his colleagues at plenary and asked that Gbajabiamila  vacates his post until cleared; a call which the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, gave effect to. Meanwhile,  Acting Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mrs Habiba Lawal, had apologised over the blunder when the Leader of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, enquired into it. Lawan pleaded with his colleagues that it was an “honest mistake”. This case becomes more  than meets th...

Sell gas to us in Naira, GENCOs tell marketers

Image
http://ift.tt/2bxL2zN By Chris Ochayi ABUJA— The power Generation Companies, GENCOs, have called on gas marketers to sell the product to them in Naira denomination against the current practice of indexing price in US dollars. Recall the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, had recently proposed to the Federal Government for a review of gas pricing to GENCOs from dollar to naira. The commission argued that it had become imperative that pricing policy be reviewed to relieve the electricity market of the pressure from foreign exchange, following Nigeria’s current economic challenges, which it said impacted on electricity production by GENCOs, which pay for gas in dollars. The call by GENCOs also tallied with the position of the Distribution Companies, DISCOs, which asked for harmonization of currency for all transactions in the market. GENCOS, which made the call in a communiqué issued at the end of the 2nd quarter market participatory and key stakeholders’ interactive ...

The narrow road to the abundant life

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J By Femi Aribisala God creates success out of failures. He creates life out of death. He creates wealth out of poverty. When Lazarus fell sick, his sisters sent word to Jesus to come and heal him. But rather than come immediately, Jesus delayed. Finally, he said to his disciples: “Lazarus is dead. And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, that you may believe.” (John 11:14-15). Lazarus is dead and Jesus is glad. I thought Jesus loves Lazarus. Yes he does. But it is precisely because of the magnitude of his love for Lazarus that Jesus wants him to die. Everlasting love When God decided to be good to Lazarus, he allowed him to fall sick and to die. Natural men wonder about this kind of goodness. Why would God allow the man he loves to die? Could Jesus not have prevented this? If he loves Lazarus so much, why delay before coming at his hour of need? But the reason why Jesus allows Lazarus to fall sick and die is so he can be good to him to a degree Lazar...

‘Heart attack risk’ for common painkillers

Image
http://ift.tt/2qEoBjG A fresh study suggests there may be a link between taking high doses of common anti-inflammatory painkillers – such as ibuprofen – and heart attacks. The paper, published in The BMJ, builds on a  previous body  of work linking these drugs to heart problems. This research suggests the risk could be greatest in the first 30 days of taking the drugs. But scientists say the findings are not clear cut. They say other factors – not just the pills – could be involved. In the study an international team of scientists analysed data from 446,763 people to try to understand when heart problems might arise. They focused on people prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen, diclofenac, celecoxib and naproxen) by doctors rather than those who bought the painkillers over the counter. ‘Raise awareness’ Studying the data from Canada, Finland and the UK, researchers suggest taking these Nsaid painkillers to treat pain and inflammation ...
