NUT says education sector lacks adequate funding

Image
http://ift.tt/2rxhD0r The Lagos wing of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) on Monday said the basic challenge of the education sector had been adequate funding. The Deputy Chairman, NUT, Mr Adedoyin Adesina told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the sector was not improving due to underfunding. Adesina said that the country was yet to meet the UNESCO standard of 26 per cent allocation to education and the maximum students per teacher ratio. “The basic challenge of education is poor funding; the country has not met the UNESCO standard of 26 per cent. “The best the country has had is 11 per cent which was last year. “Aside from the funding, the curriculum planners insert subjects in the curriculum without providing specialists for such subjects,’’ he said. Adesina said that government at all levels had not met the expected standard of education in every aspect, aside from the promises made. “For instance, the entrepreneurship that was introduced has no specia...

Buhari absent on second anniversary as president

Image
http://ift.tt/2rNywnc (FILES) This file photo taken on July 13, 2016 shows Nigeria's former military ruler President Mohammadu Buhari (C) flanked by service chiefs and other senior military officers, saluting Nigeria's military during the Army Day celebration in Dansadau, northwest Nigerian Zamfara State. Campaign group Transparency International described corruption in the Nigerian defence procurement sector as "the new diesel for Nigeria's kleptocrats". It estimated that more than USD 15 billion has been stolen, "leaving the military without vital equipment, insufficiently trained, low in morale and under-resourced". Buhari, a former military head of state, honed in on the notoriously rotten defence procurement sector after coming to power on an anti-corruption platform in 2015. As time goes by without a big name conviction, there are doubts about whether a significant dent will be made in Nigeria's culture of corruption. Buhari himself — the dri...

The Spaniard, written off as a contender in Paris after a quarter-final loss to Novak Djokovic in 2015 and an injury-enforced pull-out before the third round last year, arrives at Roland Garros as the overwhelming favourite. The 30-year-old has already reached the magical 10 titles this year at the clay-court events in Monte Carlo and Barcelona. For good measure, he also won Madrid for a fifth time, ending a two-year seven-match losing streak against Djokovic in the process. Nadal boasts a sensational career record at Roland Garros — 72 wins and just tw...

Investigations by the Hawks (Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations) revealed a coup plot by a group called the Anti-state Capture Death Squad Alliance (ASCDSA) whose hit list allegedly includes President Jacob Zuma. GULSHAN KHAN / AFP A South African court Monday granted bail to a man charged with conspiracy to assassinate top politicians including President Jacob Zuma in an apparent bid to enforce a change of government. Elvis Ramosebudi, 33, allegedly approached private companies to fund his plot before he was arrested on April 26. Calls have mounted in recent months for Zuma — mired in corruption scandals — to step down, and on Friday three former presidents made an unprecedented joint call for dialogue to end the country’s politi...

Merkel challengers fight to hang on in north Germany

http://ift.tt/2ozkS6v As at the national level, neither the SPD nor the CDU are expected to achieve an absolute majority in the regional parliament in the state capital, the Baltic Sea port city of Kiel./ AFP PHOTO / Odd ANDERSEN Voters in northern Germany headed to the polls Sunday in a regional election scrutinised over the centre-left’s chances of unseating conservative Chancellor Angela Merkel in September. The vote in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany’s northernmost state, comes as a recent surge in nationwide polls for the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) since new leader Martin Schulz was crowned in February faded. Supporters are increasingly fearful that the momentum imparted by their new leader will not carry them into the chancellery, which Merkel and her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) have held against all challengers since 2005. As at the national level, neither the SPD nor the CDU are expected to achieve an absolute majority in the regional parliament in t...

North Korea is under UN sanctions targeting its efforts to develop a nuclear missile arsenal, but Washington wants its Asian allies to do more. Deputy assistant secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Patrick Murphy told reporters that North Korea’s foreign missions are suspiciously large. These embassies, he suggested, are not just diplomatic bases but serve to help Pyongyang illegally to evade sanctions and to carry out other “nefarious acts.” And he cited as an example ...
