Gambia swears in several homegrown judges

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The Gambia’s president swore in six new judges to top courts Monday, with Gambians dominating the list in a country that long relied on foreign justices under the former regime. Courts were long seen as a tool used by The Gambia’s ex-leader Yahya Jammeh to consolidate power, jailing opposition activists and even members of his own cabinet. Justices from abroad were hired and fired with alarming frequency. Chief Justice Hassan Bubacar Jallow said the four appointed to the Supreme Court and two appointed to the Court of Appeal had all enjoyed “distinguished legal careers here and abroad”. “I am sure their appointment brings much to the legal system,” he said at an introduction ceremony at Banjul’s High Court. Cherno Sulayman Jallow, a former Attorney General of the British Virgin Islands and Mary Mam Yassin Sey, a former Gambian judge who resigned and went to work for the United Nations as a legal adviser, were appointed to the Supreme Court. Gambians appointed...

Cyberattacks ease but Putin points finger at US

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The world’s biggest ransomware attack levelled off on Monday after wreaking havoc in 150 countries and causing political acrimony, with Russian President Vladimir Putin blaming US intelligence services. The indiscriminate attack struck hundreds of thousands of computers worldwide Friday by exploiting known vulnerabilities in older Microsoft computer operating systems. Microsoft’s president and chief legal officer Brad Smith said the US National Security Agency developed the original code used in the attack, which later leaked in a document dump. The admission was leaped on by Putin. “Microsoft’s leadership stated this directly, they said the source of the virus was the special services of the United States,” the Russian leader said on the sidelines of a summit in Beijing. “A genie let out of a bottle of this kind, especially created by secret services, can then cause damage to its authors and creators.” Russia has recently been accused of cyber meddling in s...

Stop flooding Aso Rock because Buhari won’t appoint any Igbo man SGF – Amaku

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The Anambra state publicity Secretary of the United Progressive Party, UPP, Mr. Uche Amaku has advised South easterners to stop flooding Aso Rock in a bid to win the favour of President Muhammadu Buhari, all in the hope that the President may appoint one of them, an Igbo man, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF. Recall that before president Buhari departed Nigeria for London on a follow-up medical treatment, he suspended the Secretary to Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal who was accused of mismanaging N12 billion funds meant for Internally Displaced Persons (IDP). The House of Representatives committee investigated Lawal who claimed he expended N270 million under the Presidential Initiative on the North-East (PINE) “on just clearing of grass in IDP camps.’’ Mr. Amaku who gave the advise during a press conference in Awka also said that it sparks of political gullibility for some Igbo politicians to defect to the All Progressives Congress...

Be warned! No job in Dubai

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J By Nwafor Sunday It is quite disheartening to see Nigerians travel abroad in search of greener pasture. Nigeria is a land full of potentials and great opportunities, but why the search for a greener pasture elsewhere?   Believe me, Nigeria is known internationally to be endowed with virtually all the human resources needed to keep a country moving. This is confusing and thus comes this poser, why do Nigerians travel outside in search of Jobs? However, this is a question I believe most people have an answer to. Trading from the East, West, South and North, I deduced that the reason for this act is linked to political instability, economic quagmire and social unrest. Watch for yourself the video clip: http://ift.tt/2qlrogt In the above video clip, a man said over 5000 Nigerians were alleged to have traveled to Dubia in search of jobs but were disappointed after all. Most of them have two weeks visa, a month visa while some acquired one year, two years and t...
