http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Yetunde Arebi You might have come across this list on the social media. Home truths

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J By Donu Kogbara Last week, I defended ex-President Goodluck Jonathan against critics who unfairly insist that he aggressively promoted his (Ijaw) ethnic group and (Niger Delta) region. I said that Jonathan actually neglected his people, justifying this opinion by highlighting some of the things that he DIDN’T do for the Niger Delta and its indigenes – renovating Port Harcourt’s mega-dingy airport and acting on the United Nations report on the environmental devastation of Ogoniland, for example. Whenever I’ve grumbled about Jonathan’s performance since the 2015 election, some Vanguard readers have contacted me to complain about my complaint!…on the grounds that they regard it as unseemly or unkind to “kick a man when he is down”. I can sympathise with readers who have a soft spot for Jonathan because when I met him, I liked him. And you don’t have to meet him to sense that he’s a nice man. However, we all make mistakes and all possess weaknesses; and I don’t ...

GM to pull out of India, sell S Africa plant

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J By Theodore Opara G ENERAL Motors plans  to quit selling vehicles in India by the end of this year and will sell operations in South Africa, the latest steps in a strategy of focusing cash and engineering effort on fewer, more profitable markets. GM said, Thursday, it will take a $500 million charge in the second quarter to restructure operations in India, Africa and Singapore. It will cancel most of a planned $1 billion investment to build a new line of low-cost vehicles in India. About $200 million of the charge will be a cash expense, GM said. The moves are expected to save $100 million a year in a sector of GM’s global business that last year lost about $800 million, the company said. Unprofitable markets GM President Dan Ammann told Reuters in an interview that the latest restructuring moves – and a series of earlier decisions to quit unprofitable markets – allow GM to focus more money, engineering effort and senior management time on expanding where...
