Image
http://ift.tt/2o4OR62 Adewale of Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff-led PDP, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos, Mr Segun Adewale, has expressed confidence that the party will do well in July 22 council poll. Adewale of Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff-led PDP, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. He acknowledged that internal problems within the party had caused some setbacks, but said the party would rise above its challenges for a strong showing. “The PDP is a strong party in the state. Agreed there are some problems here and there caused by some people for their personal interests, but the party will overcome all that and do well at the poll,” he said. Adewale said he had made overtures to the faction led by Moshood Salvador on the need to have a united party but that his efforts were not appreciated. He said the disagreement would not de...

Trump says North Korea problem ‘will be solved’

Image
http://ift.tt/2pCogJj US President Donald Trump. / AFP PHOTO / SAUL LOEB US President Donald Trump said Friday the “problem” of an increasingly belligerent North Korea would be “solved”, as he met with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe just before the start of the G7 summit. “It’s a big problem, it’s a world problem,” he said in the Sicilian town of Taormina, adding the issue would be raised in joint meetings with the other six heads of leading industrialised countries. “It will be solved,” he said before going into closed-door talks with Abe, without giving further details. Pyongyang has launched a series of missiles this year, including a Hwasong-12 intermediate-range projectile this month which the North claimed was capable of carrying a “heavy” nuclear warhead, fuelling tensions with Washington. It has carried out two atomic tests since the beginning of last year, insisting it needs nuclear weapons to defend itself against the threat of invasion. The US is worried t...

Mourinho restores Man Utd’s winning feeling

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Judgement was reserved until the final game of his maiden campaign, but in guiding his club to Europa League glory Jose Mourinho has restored the winning feeling at Manchester United. There was little sparkling football at Old Trafford this season and despite a 25-game unbeaten run, Mourinho could do no better than a sixth-place finish in the Premier League. Yet by leading United to victory in the League Cup and Europa League, and with the latter success yielding a Champions League place, he has brought back some of the swagger that vanished when Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. “Who cares who finished second, third or fourth in the Premier League? Manchester United have won two trophies,” said former Leicester City midfielder Robbie Savage, who began his career at United, on BBC radio. “The ‘Special One’ has delivered.” Mourinho, who described his first United campaign as “my most difficult season as a manager”, has appeared tetchy and grouchy in recent w...

Police arrest 150 after post-election trouble in Paris overnight

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Police on Monday said a hundred and forty-one people were arrested in Paris after trouble flared overnight following Emmanuel Macron’s victory in France’s presidential election. The authorities said those detained in Menilmontant, a north-eastern district of Paris, were accused of offences ranging from throwing missiles at the police to damaging property. The demonstrators were protesting both against Macron – criticized by many on France’s far left as a member of a discredited elite in thrall to global capitalism – and against his defeated far-right nationalist rival, Marine Le Pen. Macron beat Le Pen by 66 percent to 34 on a platform of market-friendly reform and closer European integration. However, an abstention rate of over 25 per cent, and the fact that more than 11 per cent of those who turned out chose neither candidate, pointed to a high degree of disillusionment with the choices on offer in the runoff. The hardline leftist CGT labour union planned a...

Indonesia to disband Islamic group seeking global caliphate

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Indonesia is taking steps to disband the local chapter of an international Islamic group that seeks to unite Muslim countries under a caliphate. Top security minister Wiranto said Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia’s activities were not in line with the state religious ideology, which is known as Pancasila, and were “causing friction in society.” “After a careful consideration, the government deems it necessary to take legal action to disband Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia throughout Indonesia,” said Wiranto, who goes by one name. Hizbut Tahrir, which says that it uses non-violent means to achieve its goal for a caliphate, is active in Australia and Britain, but is banned in several Middle Eastern and Central Asian countries. A Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia spokesman could not be reached for comment. Leaders of Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia were among the proponents of massive rallies seeking the prosecution of Jakarta’s Christian governor, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, for remarks about the Ko...

Demobilised ex-rebels block entrance to Ivory Coast’s second city

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Demobilised rebel fighters seized control of main roads leading into Ivory Coast’s second city, Bouake, on Monday, demanding the payment of bonuses and their integration into the army and state institutions, a spokesman for the group said. The renewed unrest comes months after the city was the center of a wave of army mutinies that paralyzed the world’s top cocoa grower and dealt a blow to its image as one of Africa’s most promising economies. The soldiers, some wearing balaclavas or their faces blackened with ashes, set up barricades, sealing off the main road leading south to Abidjan and the capital Yamoussoukro. “Some of them have weapons but many of them don’t,” said Bouake resident Isabelle Kouassi, whose bus was turned back as it was attempting to leave the city. “They’ve blocked everything.” Mamadou Ouattara, who described himself as the spokesman for the group, said the Bouake protesters represented some 6,800 former fighters who were demobilized after...

Pakistan resumes census after deal to end deadly Afghan border fight

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Pakistan on Monday resumed its census in border villages, after Islamabad and Kabul agreed to conduct a survey for a fresh demarcation of a disputed frontier area following deadly clashes recently, officials said. Fighting erupted on Friday between Afghan border police and Pakistani troops escorting officials conducting the census near the border in the province of Balochistan. Over a dozen people, who were mostly Pakistani civilians, were killed, while almost 100 were wounded. However, the officials said the fighting lasted for the entire day. Pakistani authorities then postponed the census in two disputed villages, fearing a repeat of the clashes. No fewer than 2,000 families from the villages were evacuated from the area out of fear that their houses might come under shelling from Afghan side. According to local administration chief Qaiser Khan, the census has resumed today after the agreement. “Schools and colleges were reopened in the area and life was...

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Indonesia Minister of Legal and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly on Monday ordered a probe of officials overseeing a Sumatra’s Riau province prison where inmates massively broke out due to alleged illicit practices, including extortions. Laoly said his office has repeatedly warned against prison guards to stop extortion practices in prison. He told newsmen during inspection to the Sialang Bungkuk prison in the province’s capital that saw 448 of its inmates recently escaped. “Now those who committed extortions must receive criminal charges. “Police must investigate them,’’ the minister said. Head of the prison was dismissed on Saturday following the riot in the prison that led to the massive escape of inmates after they broke out through the prison’s main gate on Friday. Head of the ministry’s provincial office Ferdinan Siagian said thorough investigation into the extortion allegation would be conducted to prevent similar event reoccur in the future. As o...

Irrigation farmers loose N30m crops as dam dries up in Katsina

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Hundreds of irrigation farmers using water from Musawa dam in Katsina State are counting their losses following sudden drying up of the dam. Newsmen report that crops at various stages of maturity have wilted, forcing some of the farmers to commence early harvest to salvage what they could of the crops. Alhaji Idris Abdullahi, the Chairman of Musawa Irrigation Farmers Association, told journalists on Monday that more than 150 farmers were affected. Abdullahi put the estimated losses incurred by the farmers to around N30 million, and loss of jobs to about 1,000 farm hands. He said about 150 hectares of tomato, potato, wheat, maize, onion and other vegetables were damaged. The chairman said that the dam, constructed 60 years ago was only dredged once, and called on the Katsina State Government to intervene. He said that the government should dredge the dam before the rains set in, and support farmers affected to cushion their losses. The chairman described th...
