Brought under the Torture Victims Protection Act and Alien Tort Claims Act Complaint, the plaintiffs are seeking millions of dollars as damages to compensate for their grievous losses and suffering. The suit, John Doe, et al vs. Tukur Yusuf Buratai et al, with Civil Action No. 1:17-cv-01033, has been assigned to United States District Judge Ellen S. UNESCO flays drop in education aid to Africa

A report published by UNESCO’s Global Education Monitoring (GEM) revealed that total aid to education between 2011 and 2017 amounted to $12 billion, which is four per cent lower than the amount allocated in 2010 while total development aid increased by 24 per cent within the same period. Specifically, the report stated that aid to basic education, including pre-primary and primary education as well as adult education and literacy programmes was $5.2 billion; six per cent lower than the 2010 allocation while secondary education received $2.2 billion, representing 19 per cent of total aid to the sector. The sacred tree is located in a historical site in the heart of the community. An attempt on Monday by the contractor handling the project to uproot the tree was disrupted by the youths and traditional religion worshippers, who invaded the scene. Some irate youths held up traffic and lit bonfires at Odo-Oja area of the town. The protesting indigenes claimed that the historical site known locally as “Ereja” was the source of Ikere Ekiti, and uprooting the tree would result in dire consequences for the community. They also claimed that the site of the tree was host to the annual Olosunta festival. Governor Ayo Fayose, who visited the scene yesterday, appealed for calm, saying he would ensure...
