Benue Assembly passes into law 2017 appropriation bill of N176.6bn

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J BY PETER DURU MAKURDI – Benue State House of Assembly, Tuesday passed the 2017 appropriation bill of N176.6billion into law. The passage of the fiscal estimate was sequel to the consideration of the report of its standing committee on Appropriation in the Committee of Supply, chaired by the Speaker, Mr. Terkimbi Ikyange. Christened “Budget of Rural Transformation” the passed bill was N12.7billion higher than the N163.9billion originally presented to the Assembly last year by Governor Samuel Ortom. According to the Chairman of the Appropriation Committee of the House, Mr. Adam Okloho, “the increase became necessary following the non-inclusion of some on going projects by the Ministry of Finance and additional requests by MDAs for inclusion of some critical projects which were omitted in the proposed estimates.” A breakdown of the estimate showed that N66.7billion was allocated to recurrent expenditure while N109.9billion would go capital expenditure. The defic...

NYSC seeks additional land in Zamfara

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Tuesday appealed to the Zamfara government to allocate more land for the scheme’s agricultural programme in the state. NYSC State Coordinator, Hajiya Rahmatu Sanda, made the appeal in an interview with the Newmen at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Tsafe town, Tsafe Local Government Area of the state. Sanda said that the management of the scheme, initiated the new agricultural programme in addition to its entrepreneurship skill development to train the corps members in various farming activities. She, however, identified the lack of adequate land as a major challenge facing the agricultural programme. “In spite of the importance of the programme, we do not have enough land to implement it effectively. “Although our corps members have shown interest in the programme, they cannot practice these farming activities effectively with the challenge of land at hand,” she said. She said that the programme was aimed at ...

Japan: Bathhouse offers ‘naked school’ to revive communal baths

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J A Tokyo bathhouse is offering classes on topics ranging from comedy to gaming in hopes of luring younger bathers and reversing Japan’s dying tradition of communal baths. During one recent session of the “Naked School” at the Hinodeyu bath house, nine men sat around the bath, listening to an expert on the ancient board game go. “I think young people would be interested and come back to communal baths if they knew these kind of classes are offered here,” Tadashi Manayama, a 37-year-old architect, said after class. Yuichi Tamura, manager of the Hinodeyu, operated by his family since 1939, said many young people had never been to a communal bath because most homes have modern bathrooms. “I wanted to give them a reason to visit us by offering an odd event like this naked school,” Tamura addeded. In its heyday, more than 500 people bathed daily at Hinodeyu near Tokyo’s Asakusa district. Today that number is around 100, he said.   The post Japan: Bathhouse off...

Messi in superb performance to send off Enrique with Copa del Rey

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Abuja – Lionel Messi was inspired as FC Barcelona beat Alaves 3-1 on Saturday to secure the Copa del Rey for the third year running and give coach Luis Enrique a winning send-off. Enrique is leaving after three years in charge at the Nou Camp. Ibai Gomez hit the post for Alaves before Messi scored his 54th goal of the season with a 20-yard curler. Theo Hernandez bent in a free-kick to equalise, but Neymar turned in from close range and then Messi played in Paco Alcacer right on half-time. It has been a disappointing season for FC Barcelona, who finished runners-up to Real Madrid in La Liga and were eliminated from the Champions League by Juventus in the quarter-finals. They did at least restore some pride with victory over last season’s second division champions in what was the final match to be played at Atletico Madrid’s Vicente Calderon Stadium. There were some records set along the way as Enrique’s team retained the trophy, having beaten Athletic Bilbao ...

Mourinho names United’s youngest ever Premier League line-up

Image
http://ift.tt/2oJE6Fp Manchester United's Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho / AFP PHOTO / Oli SCARFF Jose Mourinho selected Manchester United’s youngest ever Premier League starting line-up as he rested his senior stars for Sunday’s domestic season finale against Crystal Palace. With United due to face Ajax in the Europa League final on Wednesday, Mourinho made no attempt to conceal his desire to keep his key players fresh for the Stockholm showpiece. United must win the Europa League to qualify for next season’s Champions League. That meant Mourinho sent out an incredibly youthful starting line-up, with an average age of 22 years and 284 days, for a fixture that had little significance for either side. Joel Pereira, a 20-year-old from Portugal, started in goal for the first time in the league, while Scott McTominay, a 20-year-old English midfielder, was handed a first league start. Demetri Mitchell, a 20-year-old English defender, was making his United debut, and Josh...
