http://ift.tt/2sG6vej Ogoni oil spill The Environmental Rights Action, Amnesty International, and Friends of the Earth Europe have called for the immediate clean-up of Ogoni in Rivers State. One year on from when the implementation of a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report on Ogoniland was officially supposed to begin, the communities of the Niger Delta are still waiting for clean-up to start. Since the current President, Muhammadu Buhari was elected the governing structures for the UNEP implementation have been put in place and a coordinator was appointed to lead HYPREP, the implementation agency. But six years after publication of the UNEP Environmental Assessment of Ogoniland very little has happened to improve the situation: communities in Ogoniland are still waiting for clean-up and still waiting for the clean air, water, and land they need; only one per cent of the promised funds have been made available: a reported $10million of the required $1bi...

Setting sun of the Nigerian revolutionary

http://ift.tt/2psVjUn Not long after he stood for elections in June 1952, he joined issues with Fulgencio Batista, the Cuban strong man who had dominated Cuban political arena for two decades. ‬“And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying. What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it. And what man is he that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not yet eaten of it? Let him also go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man eat of it. And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? Let him go and return unto his house, lest he die the battle, and another man take her.” – Deuteronomy 20: 5- 7KJV ‬ There doesn’t seem to be a clear-cut definition of who a revolutionary is in Nigeria. This confusion is transported by the histrionics of some people who go by the name but yet do not raise issues that I read in ...

Presidency trims expected earnings from non-oil sector

Image
http://ift.tt/2rUTxwL Muda Yusuf, LCCI Boss. W’Bank raises nation’s 2017 growth forecast Though the Federal Government’s diversification agenda seeks to mitigate the challenges caused by unstable oil prices, its dependence on oil revenue may linger as expectations from the non-oil sector as a major economic driver may not be realised soon. The recent review of the average oil price from $42.5/b to $44.5/b in the 2017 budget reaffirms the pessimism of government in making the non-oil sector the major revenue driver of the economy. As expectations from the non-oil sector may take longer to realise, the country will still be depending on revenue from oil which is dwindling and making it difficult for the government to effectively plan and execute its projects and programmes to better the lot of the people. Members of the Organised Private Sector (OPS) reaffirmed the pessimism, noting that the non-oil sector is currently heavily burdened with various taxes and levies amidst a ...

Three assailants kill 6 in London ‘terror’ attack

Image
http://ift.tt/2sr9xUd Police officers and members of the emergency services attend to a person injured in an apparent terror attack on London Bridge in central London on June 3, 2017. Armed police fired shots after reports of stabbings and a van hitting pedestrians on London Bridge on Saturday in an incident reminiscent of a terror attack in March just days ahead of a general election. DANIEL SORABJI / AFP Three assailants stabbed people at random after smashing into pedestrians in a van Saturday, killing six in a “terrorist” attack in central London before armed officers shot all three dead. As they rampaged through a busy night-life hub around London Bridge, the trio wore what looked like suicide vests which turned out to be “hoaxes”, said Mark Rowley, head of counter-terrorism policing. “We believe that six people have died in addition to the three attackers shot dead by police,” Rowley said. More than 30 casualties were rushed to hospitals in the area, according to the ...
