Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J PROFITS at Google parent Alphabet increased 28 percentyear-on-year to $5.4 billion, boosted by advertising on mobile phones and the popular YouTube video service. Amazon profits climbed more than 40 percent, to $724 million. It was its eighth quarter in a row of profit. Microsoft also had a strong quarter, with profits up nearly 28 percent, while chipmaker Intel’s profits rose 45 percent. Amazon said its growth was propelled by sales for web services and retail subscriptions, such as Amazon Prime. The firm highlighted its international activity, noting expansion in India, Mexico and the UK. But executives told investors that more spending on content, products and warehouses for distribution lies ahead. “Although Amazon’s sales advanced by a respectable 23 percent over the quarter, the pace of growth at the online behemoth remains much slower than it was over most of the prior fiscal year,” said Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail. “Some of th...

Finally, Eze goes home from school

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J By Prisca Sam-Duru   E ze Goes to School,  co-authored by Onuora Nzekwu and Micheal Crowder remains one of those classical master pieces by pioneer African writers that may never outlive their relevance in the society. The legendary work according to Nzekwu before his last days on earth, was born out of the dire need to write a book that focused on the education of children. It’s clear that Onuora Nzekwu’s generation sincerely imagined a society enhanced by education which is in sharp contrast of what is obtainable today. The positive impact of the book has never waned which is reason till date it’s one of the recommended text books in the secondary school. Interestingly, 60 years after the book was written, millions  of children in West Africa have read the book and would identify with the protagonist, Eze. Surprisingly and sadly too, the obstacles he went through in an effort to get education are still being experienced by some children in th...

Brides get wooden paddles to beat drunk husbands

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J An Indian state minister has given hundreds of wooden bats to newly-wed brides, urging them to use the paddle as a weapon if their husbands turn alcoholic or abusive. Gopal Bhargava gave the bats — which are used to get dirt out of clothes in traditional laundries — to nearly 700 brides at a mass wedding organised by the government of central Madhya Pradesh state on Saturday. The nearly foot-long paddles are emblazoned with messages that read: “For beating drunkards” and “Police won’t intervene”. Bhargava told the brides to reason with their husbands first, adding that they should “let the wooden paddles do the talking” if their spouses refuse to listen. Bhargava told AFP he wanted to draw attention to the plight of rural women who face domestic abuse from their alcoholic husbands. “Women say whenever their husbands get drunk they become violent. Their savings are taken away and splurged on liquor,” he said. “There is no intent to provoke women or instigate ...

After a surprise visit to a controversial aluminium plant in the southern town of Gardanne, the 48-year-old Le Pen went on to lay a wreath at a World War II monument in the nearby port of Marseille. Hours later, Macron, who if elected would become France’s youngest president at 39, paid his respects at Paris’s Holocaust memorial, where he was greeted by France’s grand rabbi, Haim Korsia. “What happened is unforgettable and unforgivable,” Macron said after pausing before the wall bearing the names of 76,0...
