http://ift.tt/2rd3yp5 (AFP Photo/Michele Sibiloni) At least eight migrants drowned when their Europe-bound boat sank off Libya’s coast and at least 100 people are missing, a coastguard official said on Saturday. The eight bodies were on an inflatable craft that can carry up to 120 passengers, said Colonel Fathi al-Rayani, head of the coastguard in Garabulli, 60 kilometres (40 miles) east of Tripoli. He estimated that “at least 100” migrants were missing. The boat was spotted deflated off Garabulli, and the coastguard found the bodies inside, said an AFP reporter who accompanied them. Conflict-ravaged Libya has long been a stepping stone for migrants seeking a better life in Europe. The UN refugee agency has said around 61,250 migrants have reached Italy since the start of the year after crossing the Mediterranean, while 1,778 more are dead or missing. The Italian coastguard has said that more than 900 migrants were rescued off Libya on Thursday and Friday. Libyan navy s...

Floods kill 26 in Kenya

Image
http://ift.tt/2rjhtGI At least 26 persons were killed and 24,803 others displaced in 13 counties across Kenya by raging flash floods following heavy rains, a humanitarian agency said on Monday. The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) said the flash floods caused widespread destruction of property and infrastructure. They also disrupted activities such as farming and education in various areas of the country. The most affected regions are in the coastal, central, north-eastern and other parts of western Kenya where heavy rains washed away bridges and blocked several roads. “The floods have also led to huge livestock losses in some areas, displacement of communities and disruption of livelihoods. “The huge losses of livestock are exposing communities that have been affected by drought, further hampering their effective recovery,” KRCS Secretary-General, Abbas Gullet said in a statement. He said that approximately 6,906 people had been displaced in the coastal region following heavy rai...

At the hearing on Monday, Mr Tijani Gazali, counsel to the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), prayed the court for time to enable him regularise the processes filed on behalf of his client. Gazali said that the name of the Director-General of the DSS was omitted in the counter affidavit filed on behalf of his clients. He prayed the court for a short adjournment to enable him correct the anomalies on the counter-affidavit, and to specifically reflect the name of Director-General of the DSS. Since there was no objection to the application for...

King late show gives Bournemouth record high

Image
http://ift.tt/2qDEyGH Joshua King Josh King took his tally for the Premier League season to 16 goals with an 85th-minute winner as Bournemouth edged Burnley 2-1 on Saturday. Sam Vokes cancelled out Junior Stanislas’s first-half opened with an 83rd-minute header, but Norway striker King had the final say at the Vitality Stadium. Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth climb to 10th place and are now guaranteed to surpass their highest ever top-flight finish of 16th last season. It was Bournemouth’s first win over Burnley in eight attempts, since a 5-0 third-tier victory in November 1998. Sean Dyche’s Burnley, who have won just once away all season, remain 14th and are effectively certain to retain their Premier League status. After a sleepy start beneath the south-coast sunshine, Bournemouth took the lead in the 25th minute. Lewis Cook’s lofted pass was chested down by Stanislas, who finished coolly past Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton. It took Burnley until the 33rd minute to muster a m...

Klopp, Simeone give hologram press conference

Image
http://ift.tt/2qAxT08 Liverpool's German manager Jurgen Klopp applauds after the English Premier League football match between Liverpool and Southampton at Anfield in Liverpool, north west England on May 7, 2017. / AFP PHOTO /  Jurgen Klopp admitted it was a “strange” experience to be a hologram guest, along with Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone, at a Munich press conference on Friday — while sat in Liverpool. 3D images of Klopp and Simeone were beamed in real time to a press conference in Munich to announce their teams’ involvement in August’s Audi Cup — a pre-season tournament hosted by Bayern Munich. Technology meant both Liverpool coach Klopp and Madrid boss Simeone could take part in the Bavarian capital, even though they were physically sat in Liverpool and Madrid respectively. The ethereal pair answered questions, with their images seated next to Bayern’s Carlo Ancelotti in a dimly lit press briefing. It is believed to be football’s first press conference conduct...

The secretary general of Macron’s La Republique en Marche (Republic on the Move), Richard Ferrand, said that 52 percent of the candidates chosen from more than 19,000 applicants had “never held elected office” and that 214 were women. “We aim to build a majority for change,” Ferrand said. A total of 577 seats are up for grabs in the June 11-18 elections to the National Assembly. Macron, himself a relative newcomer to politics who had never held office before being elected president, has until the end of next week to complete his list. His former boss Manuel Valls did not make the cut, Ferrand said, ending days of speculation about whether the former Socialist prime m...
