TETFUND spends N7bn on projects in Sokoto Varsity, in 7 years

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The Tertiary Education Trust Fund( TETFUND), said it had spent about N7 billion on the execution of projects and training of staff at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, from 2011 to date. The Executive Secretary of the fund, Dr Abdullahi Baffa, stated this in Sokoto on Saturday when he inaugurated the N300 million Centre For Advanced Medical Research and Training (CAMRET), at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto. He said that the projects were executed at the two campuses of the university, as well as the teaching hospital. Baffa listed some of the projects to include the centres of Urology and Nephrology, Research in Physical Sciences, Video Conferencing, as well as the extension of fibre optic cables for internet, among others. In the area of training, he said several academic and non-academic staff were sponsored to attend various conferences, just as TETFUND sponsored the post graduate studies of others within and outside Nigeria...

EFCC re-opens case against ex-President Jonathan’s chief physician

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday in an FCT High Court, Maitama, opened its case against Dr Fortune Fiberesima, former President Goodluck Jonathan’s chief physician. Fiberesima was alleged to have abused his position as the chief physician to the former president in 2012 in awarding contracts valued at N258.9 million and N36.9 million to companies where he had interests. He was arraigned on a six- count charge bordering on abuse of office by influencing the award of contracts to companies where he had interest. EFCC said the offences were contrary and punishable under Section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000. The contracts are reclamation of land at the State House Medical Centre and supply of medical consumables. WHO worry over obesity in Europe

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned of what it termed “alarming rise” of obesity in Europe, saying one in three European adolescents is overweight. The WHO Regional Director for Europe, Dr Zsuzsanna Jakab, stated this at the European Congress on Obesity in Portugal, citing eating habits, physical inactivity and sedentary behaviours as causes. Jakab said “despite sustained efforts to tackle childhood obesity, one in three adolescents in Europe is estimated to be overweight, with the highest rates found in southern European and Mediterranean countries.” She particularly expressed concern over the rise in eastern European countries, where obesity rates had historically been lower. The WHO director called for ambitious policy action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target to halt the increase in childhood obesity.
