The programme, tagged “Life After Retirement and Life as a Self-Employed 2017’’, is expected to hold between June 22 and June 23. Al Jazeera, 20 other websites blocked in Egypt

Image
http://ift.tt/2q2tiAo Cairo – Egypt on Thursday blocked 21 websites, including Qatari news network Al Jazeera and Islamist-affiliated platforms, following in the footsteps of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Among those blocked since Wednesday evening is the website of the now-banned Muslim Brotherhood, Ikhwan Online, according to a report in the privately owned Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper. All websites blocked contain material that “support terrorism and extremism as well as publish lies,” a security source was quoted as saying. The Arabic edition of the Huffington Post was blocked, although the English-language version was accessible. The independent Cairo-based Mada Masr was another site blocked. Since the ouster of the Muslim Brotherhood from power in Egypt in 2013, Egypt’s relations with Qatar have worsened as Cairo slams Doha for hosting members of the now-banned group. Egypt’s Gulf allies Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates blocked the website of Al Jazeera...

Merkel rules out Turkish vote in Germany on death penalty

Image
http://ift.tt/2qWGUgW German Chancellor Angela Merkel / AFP PHOTO / TOBIAS SCHWARZ Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday ruled out any participation on German soil in a potential Turkish referendum about bringing back the death penalty. Immediately after winning a close vote last month that boosted his powers, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan mooted a second referendum on reinstating capital punishment, which would mean an end to the country’s EU membership prospects. Merkel said Berlin would not make it possible for the 1.4 million Turkish voters living in Germany to participate if the referendum were to be held. “We will not give permission for something we are not obligated to do, and whose content we absolutely reject, for example, the death penalty,” she told public broadcaster WDR. Turkey abolished the death penalty in 2004 as a key pillar of its bid to join the EU. The April referendum had already opened a new rift between NATO allies Germany and Turkey, and in...

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J France’s President-elect Emmanuel Macron will be tough in negotiations over the terms of Britain’s departure from the European Union but will not seek to punish Britain, his economic adviser said on Monday. Jean Pisani-Ferry said that no-one had an interest in a hard Brexit that totally severs ties between Britain and the rest of the European Union once it leaves, saying there was a mutual interest in maintaining economic and security ties. “At the same time, we have divergent interests on some aspects of the negotiations. So there will be a tough negotiation and he will be tough,” Pisani-Ferry told BBC Radio, adding that Macron would not seek retribution against Britain for leaving the EU even as he looked to strengthen the bloc. “Punish? Certainly not. But he believes that today that Europe is part of the solution to the problems we’re facing.” Newsmen report that Prime Minister Theresa May triggered Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, which allows a nation to ...
