24 years of democratic struggle –– Hope betrayed

Image
http://ift.tt/2psVjUn Nigeria Flag Just like the green-white-green of Nigeria flag, the contrast between expectation and gratification in the country’s democratic experience is rich. There are no grey areas. On May 29 Nigerians celebrated or better, observed Democracy Day. But while the idea of celebrating eighteen unbroken years of democracy was been debated, some citizens contended that what stood out as authentic Democracy Day in the country’s political progression remains June 12. June 12 apologists cite the level of popular participation and enthusiasm that preceded the June 12, 1993 presidential election, which was annulled by the military junta under military President Ibrahim Babangida, as unrivaled. In that election, business mogul and philanthropist, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, who contested on the platform of the then Social Democratic Party (SDP) was believed to be at the threshold of defeating his defunct National Republican Party (NRC) rival, Alhaji Bashir Othma...

Children as victims of violence

Image
http://ift.tt/2rNMB3f Although the theme of the 2017 edition of Children’s Day was “Child Protection and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Issues and Opportunities,” half of Nigerian children sadly still experience physical violence and the shameful phenomenon is prevalent across the 36 states of Nigeria. Evidence from 2011 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) shows that in Nigeria, 91 percent of children age 2-14 years have been subjected to at least one form of psychological or physical punishment by their mothers/caretakers or other household members. More importantly, 34 percent of children were subjected to severe physical punishment. On the other hand, 61 percent of mothers/caretakers believed that children should be physically disciplined. Also, media reports state that the findings of the 2014 Nigeria violence against children survey conducted by the National Population Commission with the support of the United Centres for Disease Control and UNICEF, show that approxi...

Kokori: This democracy allows graft everywhere

Image
http://ift.tt/2risyqk Kokori • Legislature, A serious Drawback Former General Secretary of the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), and a prominent figure in the struggle to re-validate the June 12, 1993 presidential election, which was annulled by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, Chief Frank Kokori, in this interview speaks on the country’s democratic sojourn. He spoke to SEYE OLUMIDE. It does appear that Nigerians are not getting their fair share of democratic dividends. Do you think otherwise? WHAT can we do? Most of us who participated in the June 12, 1993 struggle that led to the enthronement of democracy, and the exit of the military from government are already disillusioned with the way things are going. Nevertheless, we still give thanks to God that we saw an end to military dictatorship in Nigeria, which from my point of view is a big gain. What else can we point to apart from that? The country is not running, as it should principally because of corrupt...

Image
http://ift.tt/2rim0Ys Architectural painting by Lekan Onabanjo When art leaves its Lagos Island’s hub onto the mainland part of the city, there comes a rare synergy with design space. From June 18 through July 10, 2017, the artists, under the title The Content, are showing that their decades of practice are indeed masterly. They are showing at luxury design space, Adam&Eve, GRA, Ikeja. Whatever the texture of exclusivity that art enjoys can be found not just only in the two existing hubs of Lagos, but also in axis as crucial like Ikeja, a central business and residential mixed district. In expanding the value of 21st century art appreciation, Ikeja could boast of the additional flavour, just as th...

Court dismisses suit against Edo monarch

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J By Bartholomew Madukwe & Dirisu Yakubu A N Edo State high court sitting in Agenebode has dismissed the suit against the paramount ruler of Okpella Kingdom, Okuokpellagbe of Okpella, Alhaji A. Y. E. Dirisu, in a case argued by his counsel, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN). Plaintiffs in the case, led by Chief Joseph Imanobe and 19 others, had sued the paramount ruler, accusing him of attempting or having the intention of altering the two ruling houses of Ogute and Oteku. It was gathered that while Ogute are Ogute-Oke, Awuyemi, Imiekuri and Imiegeli branches, Oteku comprises Komunio and Iddo. The plaintiffs had contended that the Okuokpellagbe had altered the Chieftaincy Declaration, which recognises only two ruling houses, by distributing amenities in such a way that suggests there were more than two ruling houses to the near exclusion of others. The monarch, however, in his Notice of Preliminary Objection and Counter Affidavit, argued that the plaintiffs did ...

Taraba grazing bill a revolution —Speaker

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J By John Mkom J alingo— The Speaker, Taraba State House of Assembly, Mr. Abel Diah, has described the anti-open grazing bill before the house as a revolution that is beneficial to both the pastoralists and farmers. Diah stated this yesterday in Jalingo while briefing journalists at the end of the second legislative year of the 8th Taraba Assembly. The Taraba anti-open grazing bill is coming on the heels of incessant crisis involving herdsmen and farmers, which had claimed hundreds of lives and destruction of property worth millions of naira. Diah, while debunking insinuations in some quarters that the bill was a witch-hunt of some people, said the bill was aimed at improving the life of livestock and herders. The speaker explained that the bill was not going to stop grazers outside the state from coming into the state, but that those coming in would be given a temporary permit for the purpose of identifying livestock owners.   The post Taraba grazing bil...
