Man arrested for raping mother, tossing baby away to death

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Indian police said Wednesday they have arrested one of three men accused of gang-raping a woman and tossing her baby from a moving autorickshaw, killing the infant. Police released sketches of the three men — including the autorickshaw driver — late Tuesday after registering a case of murder and gang-rape following the alleged attack last month in Gurgaon, on the outskirts of New Delhi. “We have made one arrest, yes. As far as the two others are concerned, a team is after them and we will arrest them very soon,” Gurgaon’s commissioner of police Sandeep Khirwar told AFP. In her complaint to police, the woman said she got into the autorickshaw with her nine-month-old daughter around midnight on May 29 to go to her parents’ home in Gurgaon in northern Haryana state. There were two men already in the rickshaw who started to harass her as soon as she got in and the three sexually assaulted her for several hours before dumping her by a roadside, according to her com...

IS claims coordinated attacks in Iranian Tehran, 12 dead

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Gunmen and suicide bombers stormed Iran’s parliament and the shrine of its revolutionary leader on Wednesday, killing 12 people in the first attacks in the country claimed by the Islamic State group. Dozens of people were wounded in the attacks, which ended after a standoff lasting several hours as the gunmen holed up in parliamentary office buildings. IS released a video of the attackers from inside the building via its Amaq propaganda agency — a rare claim of responsibility while an attack was still going on. Police said all the attackers had been killed by around 3 pm (1030 GMT), some five hours after it started. The Sunni jihadists of IS consider Shiite Iran to be apostates, and Tehran is deeply involved in fighting the group in both Syria and Iraq. The assaults began mid-morning when four gunmen burst into the parliament complex in the centre of Tehran, killing a security guard and one other person, according to the ISNA news agency. An interior ministr...

FAAN pensioners urge Senate to stop airports concession

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Chapter, has urged the Senate to urgently stop the planned concession of the four major airports in the country. Mr Emeka Njoku, Secretary-General, NUP, FAAN, made the call while speaking at the monthly general meeting of the union at the premises of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos on Tuesday. The Federal Government had recently appointed Transaction Advisers for the concession of the Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt airports. Njoku, however, faulted the move, stressing that the unions in the sector would continue to resist any plan to concession the viable airports by the Minister of State, Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika. He said: “The Senate recently stopped the concession of Port Harcourt Refinery because the process was not transparent. “We hereby solicit further intervention from the National Assembly on the planned concession of our four viable airports. “If this governme...

Rooney left out of England squad

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Wayne Rooney’s international career looks over after England’s all-time top-scorer was Thursday left out of the squad for next month’s World Cup qualifier against Scotland and a friendly in France. The 31-year-old striker has lost his place at Manchester United and was similarly omitted from Gareth Southgate’s England squad announced in March, although he was carrying a knee injury at the time. Fit-again Rooney, who made a brief appearance in Manchester United’s Europa League final win over Ajax in Stockholm on Wednesday, had hoped to end his international career by captaining England at next year’s World Cup in Russia. But this now looks an increasingly forlorn hope for Rooney, England’s record goalscorer with 53 goals and their most capped outfielder with 119 appearances for his country. His United career could also be over having fallen down the pecking order under manager Jose Mourinho. Thursday’s squad announcement saw Southgate opt for the likes of...

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Some beneficiaries of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), have urged Niger Delta ex-agitators and youths to support President Muhammadu Buhari’s programmes and policies for the region, saying the president meant well. The ex-agitators, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja, said they would remain grateful to Buhari’s administration for empowering them in various skills. Mr Reuben Wilson, an ex-militant leader, said that PAP, under the leadership of Brig-Gen. Paul Boroh had engaged ex-agitators in various empowerment programmes and had also facilitated employment for some of them who graduated recently. According to Wilson, PAP has also assisted in rehabilitating more than 200 persons from his camp who have all shunned violence and embraced peace. He commended the Federal Government for initiating the programme which he said had empowered many youths in the region and scaled down the crime rate. Mr Jerry Fiberesima, a ...
