Excessive alcohol consumption life-threatening, says expert

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Prof. Ganiyu Arinola of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, says certain lifestyles including excessive consumption of alcohol may damage the human immune system with high risk of susceptibility to infections and life-threatening conditions such as liver cancer or liver diseases. “Excessive alcohol may damage the immune system because alcohol reduces white blood cells (cells of defence system) and destroys essential nutrients like vitamins needed by the white blood cells to function well. “Excessive alcohol intake can harm the body’s immune system in two ways — it produces an overall nutritional deficiency depriving the body of valuable immune-boasting nutrients. “Also, it can reduce the ability of white blood cells to multiply, inhibit the action of killer white cells on cancer cells,”  Arinola, the Chemical Pathology lecturer, told the Newsmen in Ibadan on Sunday. Mixed grill as APC holds councillorship primaries in Lagos

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Councillorship candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the upcoming local council poll in Lagos emerged in many areas on Monday, but disagreements led to postponement in some areas. The party had on Sunday announced that the councillorship primaries in the 377 Wards of its 57 local government areas would hold on Monday. Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi, chairman of the APC Local Government Electoral Committee, who announced this on Sunday, had called on party members at the ward levels to make themselves available at the designated centres where the councillorship elections will hold. In some areas visited by newsmen, the elections went on smoothly, though delegates had to wait for long awaiting arrival of electoral officers. There were, however, some disagreements in some other areas.
