Sack of 145 TVC workers is national embarrassment – Unionists

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Labour leaders on Saturday described the sack of 145 workers by Continental Broadcast Services Ltd (CBS) as a national embarassment. CBS is the owner of Television Continental (TVC) and Radio Continental. Labour leaders who spoke in Lagos condemned the mass lay-off. Mr Deji Elumoye, Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State, said the sack was unnecessary and embarrassing to the nation. According to Elumoye, the sack is uncalled for especially at a time when media houses, including TVC, are under-staffed. ”In most media houses, journalists are overworked. One person covers two to three beats and now they have been sacked. It is unacceptable”, he said. The NUJ chairman said CBS had the right to hire and fire but should have endeavoured to pay workers their entitlements before issuing the sack letters. He said the sack was a wrong way to celebrate the organisation’s 10 years anniversary achieved by the workers. He said the organisation should ...

Tunisians get jail terms for eating during Ramadan

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J A court in northern Tunisia handed one-month jail terms Thursday to four men for eating in public during the Muslim dawn-to-dusk fasting month of Ramadan, a spokesman said. The four had been “eating and smoking in a public garden, a provocative act during Ramadan”, which started last week, Chokri Lahmar, prosecution spokesman at the court in Bizerte, told AFP. He said the four men had 10 days to appeal against their one-month sentences before the terms take effect. Their sentencing, which followed complaints from other local residents, comes ahead of a call circulated on social media for a June 11 demonstration to protect the rights of those who decline to take part in the Ramadan fast. Although the state has the role of “guardian of religion” under the constitution, Tunisia has no specific law banning eating in public during Ramadan, a controversy which resurfaces each year in the North African country. Most restaurants and coffeeshops remain shut in Tu...

Roma icon Francesco Totti on May 25, 2017 left fans guessing over his impending retirement after declaring he is ready to embrace a "new challenge" after playing his final game with the Serie A club on Sunday. Filippo MONTEFORTE / AFP Roma coach Luciano Spalletti said securing a win, and not giving Francesco Totti a full game on his swansong, remains the priority in their final match of the season at home to Genoa. A sold-out Stadio Olimpico is set to bid farewell to iconic club captain Totti, 40, when he brings his 25-season career with Roma to an end on Sunday. But with second spot up for grabs in Serie A, and third-placed Napoli only a point further behind before they travel to Sampdoria, Spalletti said Totti’s needs co...

APC takes-over PDP’s office in Enugu, say “change has come”

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The All Progressives Congress has taken over the office of the Peoples Democratic Party in Enugu State. Reports indicated that a building on Chime Lane, a street in the GRA part of the Enugu metropolis, which had served as the secretariat of the PDP in Enugu State for several years, is now the office of the Enugu State chapter of the APC. Flags, posters, banners, billboards and other paraphernalia of the PDP, which hitherto adorned the duplex, had been replaced with an APC signboard that proclaimed ‘All Progressives Congress, Change Has Come.’ The development followed the claimed recent defection of a former Enugu State governor, Sullivan Chime, from the PDP to the APC. Chime, who served as the governor of Enugu State on the platform of the PDP from 2007 to 2015, allegedly joined the APC recently after pronouncing the PDP ‘dead and buried.’ A PDP member in Enugu State, who pleaded anonymity, informed newsmen that the  building actually belongs to Chime. ...

This was even as the military declared that contrary to rumours in some quarters that some of its officers had planned a coup against the present federal administration, there was nothing as such. The military said it was loyal and committed to President Muhammadu Buhari, declaring that any coup attempt from any quarter would not have the backing of the Nigerian Armed Forces, insisting that it was committed to working for the sustenance of the ongoing democracy in the country. To this end, it enjoined Nigerians not to be afraid of any coup, saying all levels of its commands were out there administering troops to remain focus and be conscious of the oath of allegiance they took to guide the constitution of the...

Arguments on Osinbajo’s current status needless distraction – FG

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J By Levinus Nwabughiogu ABUJA-Federal Government has described the uproar generated by President Muhammadu Buhari’s letter to the National Assembly, making Vice President Yemi Osinbajo the “coordinator” of activities of the federal government in his absence as a needless distraction. It will be recalled that President Buhari who left Abuja for London Sunday night to attend to his failing health had written to the National parliament, informing them of his trip and also announcing Osinbajo as the man in charge of the nation’s affairs in compliance with Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). But a Senator from Abia State, Moa Ohuabunwa picked holes with the letter, saying that the wordings put Vice President Osinbajo as merely a “coordinating” Vice President instead of Acting President. Buhari’s letter read by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki on Tuesday stated thus: “In compliance with Section 145 (1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), I wish t...

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Second round matches of the 2016/17 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) has now been scheduled to commence on Sunday, May 21, a shift from the earlier scheduled date of May 7. Salihu Abubakar, the Chief Operating Officer of the League Management Company (LMC) in a notice to clubs communicating the new date, explained that it was to allow Rangers International and Rivers United complete their rescheduled fixtures. “We also have deemed it right to accommodate the State Federation Cup finals which obviously will feature some of the NPFL Clubs”, Abubakar added. Following their drop from the CAF Champions League to the CAF Confederation Cup, Rangers and Rivers United had a number of fixtures rescheduled by the LMC and the dates have dragged beyond the mid-season break. “We didn’t think it would be appropriate for the clubs to carry over their first stanza fixtures into the second round”, the LMC official noted. Rivers United will on Wednesday, May 3 host R...
