SURVEY: 18 years after, Nigerians assess gains of democracy

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Most Nigerians observed on Monday that democracy has proved to be the best system of government that has come to stay in Nigeria. They spoke with the Newsmen  across the country, although some expressed mixed feelings about the performance of democracy in the last 18 years. For instance, Prof. Chika Aliyu, an economist, commended the Federal Government on the Economic Growth and Recovery Plan (ERGP) as President Muhammadu Buhari marked second year in office. Aliyu, a lecturer at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, said the government did very well by coming up with the plan to take the country out of recession. According to him, the ERGP aims at making significant progress to achieve structural economic change with a more diversified and inclusive economy in five key areas by 2020. He, however, advised the government to ensure effective implementation of the plan, commending the government for investing in agriculture as well. Also, in his view, Mr ...

MAY 29: The greatest threat to Nigeria’s democracy is Justice Abang

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Nigeria has experienced 18 years of uninterrupted democracy from 1999 to 2017. During this period , we have witnessed an increased strengthening off all tiers of Government in the executive, judiciary and the legislature. Many political pundits in 1998 when we began this democratic journey predicted that the military will still intervene by truncating the process again. It would have been unbelievable if anyone had been told over the years that a government in power will lose to the opposition like in the case of a 2015 general election. There is no gainsaying in the fact that Nigeria’s democracy is not only maturing but has come of age. However one is seriously worried about the threats to our democratic experience coming from the judiciary, reminiscent of the events of 1993 when enemies of democracy used the court to cause confusion and chaos and eventual scuttling of democratic proces...

Ali Modu Sheriff-led PDP, made the disclosure in an interview with newsmen in Lagos. He acknowledged that internal problems within the party had caused some setbacks, but said the party would rise above its challenges for a strong showing. “The PDP is a strong party in the state. Agreed there are some problems here and there caused by some people for their personal interests, but the party will overcome all that and do well at the poll,” he said. Adewale said he had made overtures to the faction led by Moshood Salvador on the need to have a united party but that his efforts were not appreciated. He said the disagreement would not deter his faction from preparing well for the poll even as he said the door of peace was still open to the Salvador camp. Adewale said his faction conducted its ...
