WHO elects new chief to lead reform

The race to succeed Hong Kong-born Margaret Chan as the UN’s global health boss will be decided by secret ballot among WHO member-states in Geneva. Chan’s decade-long tenure which ends on June 30 was notably marred by the fiercely-criticised response to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa. President Hassan Rouhani said that Iran does not need the permission of the United States to conduct missile tests, which would continue "if technically necessary". / AFP PHOTO / ATTA KENARE Iran’s newly re-elected President Hassan Rouhani on Monday dismissed his US counterpart Donald Trump’s summit with Arab leaders in Saudi Arabia this weekend as “just a show”. “The gathering in Saudi Arabia was just a show with no practical or political value of any kind,” Rouhani said at a press conference. In a jibe at the billion-dollar deals signed between Trump and the Saudi government, Rouhani said: “You can’t solve terrorism just by giving your people’s money to a superpower.” He said Friday’s election in Iran that saw Rouhani convincingly defeat hardline challenger Ebrahim Raisi had been a message to the world that Tehran was ready for engagement. “We want...

CLARY US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson warned Sunday that the United States was still in the “early stages” of applying pressure on Pyongyang, after yet another North Korean missile test in defiance of international sanctions. The test of what the US military described as a medium-range missile fired from Pukchang, North Korea was the second this week, and the 10th this year. The drumbeat of missile tests and persistent fears North Korea may conduct a sixth nuclear test has sent tensions soaring on the Korean peninsula. In an interview with Fox News Sunday, Tillerson called the latest test “disappointing” and “disturbing,” but he rejected a suggestion it was a sign that the United States’s approach to the challenge posed by North Korea was not working. “That would not be my takeaway at all,” he said. “We are early in the stages of applying the economic pressure as well as the diplomatic p...
