End the acrimony, develop your state, NGO tells Gov. Bello, Melaye

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Nigeria Youth Advocacy for Peace (NYAP), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), has called on Kogi Governor, Yahaya Bello and Sen. Dino Melaye, to end their face-off and work to develop the state. Founder of the organisation, Dr Ugbede Paul, who made the call in Abuja on Wednesday, told the Newsmen that both leaders should also find ways to provide employment for youths in the state. Ugbede said that the current “war’’ between the two politicians was uncalled for because there were more important things to be done in Kogi. He said the rift between the men could be resolved without much noise and drawing attention to themselves, adding that constructive words could have been used to encourage youths’ development. “Dino is a senator representing Kogi West, while Yahaya Bello is the governor of the state; one would think that the two ought to come together to form an alliance that will benefit the people. “However, the reverse is the case because for days now Di...

Court fixes Nov. 14 to hear suit against ex-Gov. Shema

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Justice Ibrahim Bako of the Katsina State High Court on Tuesday fixed Nov. 14 to hear a suit against former Gov. Ibrahim Shema for allegedly misappropriating N10 billion state funds. The  state government and EFCC had sued Shema for the alleged offence while he, in turn, had approached the Court of Appeal, Kaduna, challenging the jurisdiction of the High Court to try him. Tuesday’s sitting was for the parties to report to the court on the progress at the Appeal Court. Bako, in his ruling, said that the court, having listened to both counsels, had no other option than to adjourn the sitting. “I hereby adjourn the sitting to Nov. 14, 2017, for the parties to report to the court on the verdict of the upper court.’’ The EFCC lead counsel, Ahmed El-marzuk, who is also the state’s Attorney-General, had earlier told the court that the Appeal Court would hear Shema’s motion on Nov 9. El-marzuk also informed the court that EFCC had written a letter to the Appeal ...

Govt can solve unemployment by investing more in textile/fashion industry, says Awolowo

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Mr Segun Awolowo, the Chief Executive Officer, (CEO) Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), says government must invest more in the fashion/ textile industry to solve the rate of  unemployment in the country. Awolowo said that the industry was a viable sector to invest in because the country is blessed with a vast land to cultivate cotton; the major raw material required by the fashion industry. He said these as the grand finale of the Africa Fashion Week Nigeria (AFWN)2017 held at the National Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos. According to him, the country’s goal is to position the manufacturing industry as a viable sector for boosting the non-oil export sector so as to increase its economic growth. The NEPC boss said the government would be achieving this by investing in the textile industry that would serve as the spring board for the resuscitation of the fashion industry. Awolowo commended Ronke Ademiluyi, the founder of AFWN for initiating the fashion sho...

U.S. threatens to withdraw from UN Human Rights Council

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The U.S. threatened to withdraw from the UN Human Rights Council unless reforms are ushered in including the removal of what it sees as an “anti-Israel bias”, diplomats and activists said. U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, who holds cabinet rank in President Donald Trump’s administration, said on Friday that Washington would decide on whether to withdraw from the Council after its three-week session in Geneva ends this month. Under Trump, Washington has broken with decades of U.S. foreign policy by turning away from multilateralism. His decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement last week drew criticism from governments around the world. The Council’s critical stance of Israel has been a major sticking point for its ally the U.S. Washington boycotted the body for three years under President George W. Bush before rejoining under Barack Obama in 2009. Haley, writing in the Washington Post at the weekend, called for the Council to “end its pract...

Likely scenarios if Biafra goes

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J By Ochereome Nnanna MAY 30th 2017 has gone down as a date that the Igbo people showed, with total accord, that they are dead serious about their quest for freedom. The sit-at-home call by the pro-Biafra groups, the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, was observed by Ndi Igbo all over the country, with the South East totally locked down. Streets and highways were empty of commercial or vehicular activities, except for the vehicles of law-enforcement agencies which patrolled to maintain law and order. The skies over major cities such as Aba, Enugu, Onitsha, Owerri and Umuahia were patrolled by military jets and helicopters. Unlike other times when the pro-Biafra groups called for mass actions through peaceful street protests which led to loss of lives as a result of shootings by the army and police, no one was in sight to be shot. Already, the initial mockery that greeted the Biafra i...

Raufnomics: A sorry state of Nigeria political economy

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J R AUFNOMICS , a somewhat new but disturbing concept which encapsulates the economic philosophies and strides of the current governor of Osun state, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, is seeking to find room in our political economy. We however must refuse to allow such mediocre concept, lacking of clear outcome objectives, to ever take root in our dear nation. To think that the originator and campaigner in chief of such a wobbled theory is one who has presided over a state for the better part of his administration without a cabinet and is incapable of meeting a basic, yet fundamental obligation as the regular payment of salaries of civil servants who have dutifully fulfilled their own end of the bargain. What then are we supposed to learn from “Raufnomics”? Grandiose plans and white elephant projects? Incoherent macroeconomic policies almost leading to insolvency? Or populists projects that rarely translates to meaningful socio-economic benefits. When the Osun state governm...

Blast in Philippine capital kills two

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J An explosion in the Philippine capital on Saturday killed two people, police said, the second blast in the area in a week. The blast occurred in Quiapo, one of the older parts of Manila where there are big slums, claiming two lives and injuring four, the capital’s police chief, Oscar Albayalde told DZMM radio. Another blast in Quiapo on April 29, which occurred as Southeast Asian leaders were meeting for a summit, injured 14 people. Police said that a pipe bomb caused that blast, and insisted it was not a terrorism incident related to the gathering of political leaders. Police did not immediately give any explanation for Saturday’s explosion. The post Blast in Philippine capital kills two appeared first on Vanguard News . Vía Vanguard News http://ift.tt/2pgybEg
