Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J I am happy to be in the midst of a gathering of journalists and media practitioners, today. I am especially glad that you chose to have us reflect on a very important and ever-relevant topic of the fight against the malice of corruption in Nigeria, and the roles a powerful tool like the media can play in combating corruption in our country. Having this discussion in the month of Ramadan, a time of spiritual odyssey, underscores the fact that we should not only pray but compliment the needed supplications with practical solutions to our challenges of nationhood. There is a consensus about the position of corruption as our major impediment to greatness. It is a malady that has unfortunately gone deep into our national fabric. Corruption is the major reason why we are where we are today as a country. It is also the reason why we are unable to address a lot of our problems and challenges. Years of mindless stealing and waste of public resources has brought bad name ...

Macron fails to woo Trump’s support on Paris agreement

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday said he failed to woo U.S. President Donald Trump’s support on Paris agreement on climate change. Macron, speaking at a joint news conference with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on the heels of their meeting in Brussels, said as for climate, President Trump could assert his position. “I respect the fact that he has a review of the Paris agreement. “The agreement is an important thing for international community. “We have a political responsibility to assume, and we have to think also about jobs and economic development. “No hasty decision should be taken on this subject by the United States, our collective responsibility is to ensure that this commitment remains a global commitment,’’ he added. The Paris Agreement was agreed by the 195 member economies which attended the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris. It, however, went into effect in November. If we swapped 82 Chibok girls for some Boko Haram elements, so what? – Lai Mohammed

Image
http://ift.tt/2qiwKKz By Emmanuel Elebeke ABUJA – The Federal Government has carpeted the Amodu Sherrif led PDP faction for its comment on the released Chibok Girls, describing it as inhuman, indecent, inhuman and ill-timed. A statement credited to the PDP faction had criticized the process that led to the release of the 82 Chibok Girls over the weekend. But in a counter statement, issued in Abuja on Monday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said it is patently insensitive for any individual or organization to seek to douse, on the altar of politics, theuniversal joy that has greeted the release of the 82 girls -the highest number so far freed since their unfortunate abduction under the watch of the PDP over three years ago. He said from the ill-advised statement, it is clear that the PDP, whose incompetence and cluelessness precipitated the Chibok girlscrisis in the first instance, is not wishing and praying for it to end with the safe return of the ab...

Nigeria’s Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, on Saturday in Lagos, called for the prosecution of those he described as detractors in the fight against corruption in the country. Prof. Soyinka made the call at the opening of his Vision of the Child Art Exhibition, 2017 edition, at Freedom Park, Lagos with the theme: Enhance the Heritage; Advance the Future, in celebrating Lagos at 50. He said that most times, the anti-corruption agency was sent on the wrong track or wild goose chase, resulting to no prosecution. “When we talk about corruption, is it not time we legislate against detractors, who deliberately create distraction. Say for instance, the money just found in Lagos. ‘‘One governor claimed that the money belongs to his state government, claiming a pro...
