Tinubu said this in a message on Sunday night entitled ‘What June 12 Taught Us’, to mark the 24th anniversary of the annulled presidential election, believed to have been won by Chief Moshood Abiola. Abiola, who insisted on his mandate after the annulment by the then military President, Gen. http://ift.tt/2rOIhkm Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu chairs the weekly cabinet meeting at his office in Jerusalem on June 11, 2017. Ariel Schalit / AP / AFP Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Sunday for the United Nations to shut down its Palestinian refugee aid agency, saying it was responsible for incitement against the Jewish state. Netanyahu said he raised the issue during the visit in recent days of Washington’s UN envoy Nicky Haley, who has accused the United Nations of bias against Israel. “I told her that the time had come for the United Nations to reconsider the continued existence of UNRWA,” his office quoted him as saying, referring to the UN Relief and Welfare Agency. He said that while millions of other refugees around the world were cared for by the office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), only the Palestinians have their own body. “In UNRWA’s institutions, there is a great deal of incitement against Israel,” Netanyahu...

NMetS president predicts bumper harvest in 2017

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The President, Nigerian Meteorological Society (NMetS) Prof. Clement Akoshile, said on Friday that there would be bumper harvest this year, if the current weather continued for a long time. Akoshile made the remark in an interview in Lagos. According to him, the intense sunshine in the morning is an indication that the sun ray is not being disturbed by cloud or dirty atmosphere. “We have just moved from the harmattan period, when there is much dust in the atmosphere, to rainy season. “Now, the rain has washed away the dust, making the air cleaner. “Because of the cleaner atmosphere, the sun ray gets to the earth direct, and it is not being covered by the cloud. “The plants are ‘happy’ as the processes of photosynthesis take place unhindered, and the soil is enriched with nutrients. “If this continues for a long time, there will be bumper harvest at the end of planting season,” he said. Akoshile said that the earth was in a period of longer days and shorter...

The Indian men's football team on Thursday climbed to the 100th spot in the latest FIFA world rankings — their best rating in more than two decades. / AFP PHOTO / Michael BUHOLZER The Indian men’s football team on Thursday climbed to the 100th spot in the latest FIFA world rankings — their best rating in more than two decades. Despite having a population of well over one billion, India languishes as a footballing minnow, ranked equally alongside Nicaragua, Lithuania and Estonia in a global table headed by Brazil. India — where the national pastime of cricket is something of an obsession that squeezes other sports out of the running — last made the top 100 in 1996, reaching an all-time high of 94, before plunging. The boost in ranking comes after India beat Cambodia 3-2 in Phnom Penh on March 22 in a friendly clash before edging out Myanmar 1-0 in Yangon on March 28 during an AFC Asian Cup qualifying match. http://ift.tt/2qtVhZW French presidential election candidate for the far-right Front National (FN) party Marine Le Pen (2ndR) is applauded by supporters at the end of a campaign meeting, on April 27, 2017 in Nice. / AFP PHOTO / Valery HACHE French presidential far-right candidate Marine Le Pen fought off accusations of plagiarism on Tuesday as supporters of her rival Emmanuel Macron warned that a high abstention rate could hurt his chances of victory. It emerged that Le Pen had copied parts of a fiery speech she made Monday from one made about two weeks earlier by one-time conservative candidate Francois Fillon, the former frontrunner who was eliminated in the first round of the election. In an address on April 15, Fillon made specific mention of the geography of France’s borders, paid tribute to the French language and spoke of a third “French way” for the 21st century. Analysis by the Ridicule TV YouTube channel showed Le Pen repeated these passages almost verbatim from F...
