Lagos to register newspapers, online publications

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J By Monsuru Olowoopejo lagos—the Lagos State Government, yesterday, said it has started the  review of the 14-year-old Newspapers Law, to effectively regulate media activities in the state. The State Government argued that the review became necessary considering the developments that have taken place since the enactment of the law. Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, who gave the hint at the 2017 ministerial press briefing held at Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja, lamented that the existing Newspapers Law has become obsolete and cannot respond effectively to present challenges. He said: “In view of the realization that the State Newspapers Cap Law is obsolete, the state government has begun the process of reviewing existing Newspapers Law Cap No2 of 2003 with a view to making it more effective and in tune with modern reality. “The review attempt is not to stifle the media. Guinea completely dominated the match and went 5-0 up before Gabon hit a consolation goal in the second half. Later on Sunday, Cameroon were scheduled to face Ghana in the other Group A match. Group B’s opening matches take place in Libreville on Monday with Mali facing Tanzania and Angola taking on Niger. The top four teams will qualify for the Under 17 Fifa World Cup in India in October which gives the teams an extra incentive to do well. Before the opening game, Gabon’s head coach, Pierre Mfoumbi, had said he hoped his players could get off to a good start, in their bid to reach the World Cup for the first time. UN report details how Boko Haram used 90 children for suicide bombings in Nigeria

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J New York – Children in Northeast Nigeria continue to be brutalized as a result of Boko Haram’s insurgency in the region and the ensuing conflict, a UN report released on Thursday has said. The ‘Report of the Secretary-General on Children and Armed Conflict in Nigeria’, documented the impact on children of the severe deterioration of the security and humanitarian situation in the country between January 2013 and December 2016. Ms Virginia Gamba, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, in a press release from her Office, described the report as a ‘first-of-its-kind’. “With tactics including widespread recruitment and use, abductions, sexual violence, attacks on schools and the increasing use of children in so-called ‘suicide’ attacks, Boko Haram has inflicted unspeakable horror upon the children of Nigeria’s north-east and neighbouring countries.” The Secretary-General’s report detailed grave violations committed by Bok...
