Marking `Biafra day’ paralyses Onitsha

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The 17th anniversary celebration to mark the call for republic of Biafra paralysed social and economic activities in Onitsha, Anambra on Monday. Members of Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State Biafra (MASSOB) – Biafra Independent Movement (BIM) occupied major streets of Onitsha hoisting `Biafra’ flags. Some members who came from Nnewi, Awkuzu, Ogidi, Nkpor and Aguleri were seen moving on foot, in cars, tricycles and motorcycles which greatly slowed down vehicle and human traffic. Addressing the members, the Anambra North Zonal leader of MASSOB-BIM, Mr Vincent Iloh, reiterated the resolve of the group to sustain the agitation through peaceful means. “It is exactly 17 years today; what we in MASSOB-BIM are still saying through non violence is for Biafrans to be granted independence from Nigeria. “That was what our great hero and the Peoples General, late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu tried to do in 1967 but was misunderstood. “This is what t...

Chibok girls: Nigerians in Diaspora laud Buhari, hail military shake-up

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The Nigerians in Diaspora Monitoring Group, (NDMG) UK Chapter, has saluted the federal government over the release of 82 Chibok Girls from captivity. According to NDMG, the release of the girls was a confirmation that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is sincere to Nigerians in keeping its promises. A statement issued on Thursday by its general secretary, Depreson Okereke also commended the recent shake-up in the military, saying that it would further reposition the Nigerian Army with its mandate to tackle terrorism with a renewed vigour. The statement said, “We therefore laud the Nigerian Military and the Buhari administration for the rescue of the Chibok Girls and many other abductees whose release did not make media headlines. “Across the oceans, Nigerians in Diaspora are happy to read about the numerous encomiums being showered on the Nigerian Military by respected nations of the world like the USA, the U.K., France, Germany and Rus...

White House fumes after Russia releases Trump meeting photos

http://ift.tt/2pCw7Xq US President Donald Trump. / AFP PHOTO / SAUL LOEB Donald Trump’s administration was left red-faced Thursday after the Kremlin surprised them by releasing pictures of a closed-door meeting between the US president and Russia’s top diplomat. The images — issued by the Russian state news agency TASS, and subsequently published by much of the global media — showed a grinning Trump shaking hands with Sergei Lavrov and the Russian ambassador in Washington, Sergei Kislyak, during an Oval Office meeting. That Wednesday meeting was already being seen as a major diplomatic coup for the Kremlin, a red carpet welcome just months after being hit with US sanctions for meddling in the 2016 presidential election. Veteran diplomats questioned why Trump agreed to host the diplomats — a rare honor for non-heads of state, much less for those at the center of major US political scandal. US administrations often treat Oval Office meetings as a type of currency, dangling t...

Why Nigerians crave to live Overseas

Image
http://ift.tt/2pRpR1O By CHIOMA GABRIEL, EDITOR SPECIAL FEATURES Ogadi, 46 had always nursed a dream to live and work in America. Immediately he finished his secondary school in one of the Ajegunle schools in Lagos, travelling abroad became his main focus. For years, Ogadi nursed the dream and made several attempts that failed. But it became an obsession that he could not control. At one point, he made it to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport but it turned out his visa was fake and he was sent back. Soon he began to notice that most of his colleagues that graduated from the same secondary school with him and other contemporaries in his neighbourhood had already graduated from the university while he still struggled for a United States visa. The girls in the neighbourhood whom he had ‘chased’ at one point or the other began to use it to mock him at his back. Every girl in the neighbourhood knew that Ogadi used the line of ‘about to travel abroad’ to chase girls and years bec...
