Greece’s ‘wizard of the weird’ wins best screenplay at Cannes

Image
http://ift.tt/2rerULK Director Yorgos Lanthimos, Best screenplay ex aequo award winner for his film "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" at 70th Cannes Film Festival on May 28, 2017. The Greek master of the weird Yorgos Lanthimos picked up the best screenplay award at the Cannes film festival Sunday for his icy thriller “The Killing of a Sacred Deer”. Despite dividing critics — and prompting its star Nicole Kidman to say she wouldn’t be taking her kids to watch it — the creepy tale inspired by Euripides’ Iphigenia impressed the Cannes jury. He shared the prize with Scottish director Lynne Ramsay for her film “You Were Never Really Here”. “Sacred Deer” picks up the laconic tone of Lanthimos’s hit “The Lobster” but then becomes much darker after a heart surgeon played by Irish actor Colin Farrell operates on a man while he is drunk and kills him. Years later, the dead man’s teenage son plots revenge, telling the surgeon he must choose a member of his family to kill or th...

For the teacher reward in heaven poverty on earth!

Image
http://ift.tt/2pMKjlw Sir: Becoming a teacher in Nigeria, doesn’t exactly align with the prayers of most young Nigerians who seek God’s direction in their search for a glamorous future occupation. Try suggesting the teaching profession to an intending “Jambite” and you’d almost certainly be rebuked for your unreasonable statement, with a fervent “God Forbid!” to ensure such absurd wish never come to pass. Aside from the snide remarks which undergraduates studying education struggle to endure on a daily basis from peers of other disciplines (which are considered to be more honorable and economically viable), a great portion of ‘Edu’ students, already seem to have programmed their immediate-future endeavours away from the classroom. A teacher’s reward is said to be in heaven. Well, while such complimentary divine assurance is expected to draw some attraction to the teaching profession, the farther it scares people away from it! It’s not news that a huge number of Nigerian teachers are...

Yakubu Gowon, Rivers people were held in bondage and had to endure severe hardship in the default Eastern Region. How pensioners are robbed and dumped

Image
http://ift.tt/2qtXI2m When the ancient Hebrew wise King Solomon said that the aggressive shall be rich while the poor is feeble (Proverbs 10:4), he probably foresaw the poverty, agony and distress that retired civil servants would face in Nigeria after spending their youthful lives and talents working for a system that doesn’t care for their welfare. King Solomon was sounding a note of warning to humanity that the only way to liberate from poverty is through diligent working, smartly, along the line of personal vision. Getting a job might be good in a system that cares for the citizenry. But one won’t be rich even in such a system; the person won’t suffer on retirement and old age. Worldwide, the richest people are not salary earners or civil servants. The richest people are those who have personal vision of what they want to do with their own hands. When the vision is put into action, the result is prosperity and wealth. Forget about the corrupt visionless and greedy individuals wh...

In his welcome address, the Chairman of the Committee, Saheed Akinade-Fijabi, said with the passage of the bills, NIPOST would be well positioned for the realisation of the federal government financial inclusion programme, which seeks to provide access to the unbanked and under-banked rural communities as key to poverty alleviation. He explained that the dwindling oil revenue and the current global recession necessitated the need for the nation to diversify its economy. He said: “The two (2) Bills ...

Igbo not satisfied with Buhari, says Ikedife

Image
http://ift.tt/2qtXY17 Ikedife Former President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dr. Dozie Ikedife, spoke to LAWRENCE NJOKU on how the Igbo have fared in the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari in the last two years. Excerpts: Igbo’s perception of Buhari’s government Ndigbo see the administration as one that has truly continued in their marginalization. The suffering is very obvious and it is clearly written that they are not part of this system. It is clear to any observer that Buhari’s administration has not accommodated Ndigbo in the process of governance and it looks like a deliberate effort to put them way outside the system, because so far, apart from the statutory appointments in the constitution, that he should appoint a Minister from each of the state of the federation, I don’t know what else Ndigbo have benefited. In the reactivation of the railway, the eastern line was not included and we are being told that it will be reactivated under a PPP arrangement. That is th...
