Saraki told newsmen in Ibadan on Saturday that Nigerians, irrespective of political, ethnic and religious affiliations, must shun calls for disintegration. Pressmen report that Saraki, in company with Sen. Abdulfatai Buhari(APC-Oyo North), was in Ibadan for the wedding ceremony of the daughter of APC chieftain, Chief Bisi Akande. The senate president was reacting to the ultimatum issued by some northern youths to Igbos to quit the north by Oct. 1 and the counter threats by some other ethnic groups. But Saraki said that the unity of the country was not negotiable, adding that Nigerians must come together to achieve peace and progress. “ Leaders from the various regions of the country should preach unity to their youths. “We are leaders to guide the youths through the path of progress which the nation deserves now. “ We won’t relent until this country achieve greatne...

Speaking with pressmen after watching the match on Saturday, the Secretary of Akwa Ibom Football Association, Joseph Eberefe, said that the loss struck him “like earthquake”. “It is disappointing, we did not expect this, it is very frustrating. “The absence of regular players like Victor Moses, Mikel Obi and the others were felt on the pitch, “These ones have tried but they are not experienced as the usual Eagles players,” Eberefe said. Two worshipers lure teenage girl to back of church, gang-rape her during fellowship

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Two friends and worshippers — Samuel Oriko and Joseph Bassey — who allegedly lured a teenage girl to the back of a  church during fellowship and gang-raped her, were on Friday hauled up before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court. The accused — Oriko, 25, and Bassey, 30 — both unemployed, reside in Ogba in Ikeja area of Lagos. The two are being tried for conspiracy and gang rape. The accused, according to the Prosecutor, Sgt. Raphael Donny, committed the offences on May 23 at the back of Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Ogba. Donny said the accused lured the girl to the back of the church while prayer was going on and raped her. He said the two accused and the 13-year-old girl are members of the congregation. “The accused covered the girl’s mouth so that she will not shout and took turns to rape her. “The girl wept profusely and reported the incident to her mother, who was praying inside the church and the accused were immediately apprehended,” Donny tol...

One dead as soldier shoots at protesting youths in Kaduna, police restore calm

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abdulrahman Ahmed said a vehicle of the joint security outfit, Ã’peration Yaki’ was burnt by the irate youths who trooped to the street demanding justice. “The situation is now very calm,” Ahmed told newsmen in his office, adding that the roads earlier blocked by the youths have been cleared and were now motorable. Onyereri, who is Chairman of Committee on Banking and Currency, said this in Abuja while fielding questions from journalists on the unhealthy state of commercial banks. He explained that when there was high interest rate and government took to domestic borrowing, it would introduce an artificial benchmark which would make it difficult to execute project. He also identified high levels of non-performing loans as one of the problems of commercial banks.
