Malaria: Don blames health sector actors for poor govt. policies

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J A university lecturer, Dr Henry Sawyer, has criticised major actors in the health sector for not advising the government on the right policy approach to reduce malaria burden and its attendant death rate. Sawyer, the Dean, School of Health and Environmental Science, Kwara State University, Malete, made this criticism while speaking on Sunday in Ibadan. He said that while the ongoing government efforts and other stakeholders to reduce the national burden of malaria was laudable, it would not help to reduce its recurrence. “The immunisation, distribution of mosquito nets, public enlightenment and education are all curative and not preventive efforts. “This approach has always been practised in the past, yet we keep on having the same result with little reduction in malaria eradication. “Preventive health component of the health service delivery is the most vital component if we want to see the end of this debilitating disease. Sawyer said that the eliminat...

Facebook adding 3,000 people to screen out violent content

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Facebook said Wednesday it is hiring an extra 3,000 staff to root out violent content as the social media giant faces scrutiny for a series of killings and suicides broadcast on its platform. “If we’re going to build a safe community, we need to respond quickly,” chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said on his Facebook page. “We’re working to make these videos easier to report so we can take the right action sooner — whether that’s responding quickly when someone needs help or taking a post down.” The 3,000 new recruits, added over the coming year, will increase by two thirds the size of Facebook’s community operations team, which currently numbers 4,500. Zuckerberg’s announcement came a week after a 20-year-old Thai man broadcast live video on the world’s most popular social media platform, showing him killing his baby daughter before committing suicide. The previous week, a US man dubbed the “Facebook Killer” fatally shot himself after three days of a frantic n...
