Cocoyam: Still cultivated far below potential yield

Image
http://ift.tt/2qGrwYp With rising cost of yam, rice, garri, yam flour and other food crops, Nigerians are desperately looking for alternatives to overcome the current economic crunch. One of the food items gaining attention at the moment is Cocoyam. Cocoyam is a traditional staple root crop, commonly grown among small-scale farmers who operate within the subsistence economy. In the past, it is regarded as a lowly crop, which cultivation and consumption lie among the less privileged farmers, but presently it is consumed by Nigerians of different cadres. It produces optimum yields when planted in fertile soil with a good water retention capacity. Most cocoyam varieties mature in about eight months from planting. It has two main varieties-white and pink and can be planted on the crest of the heaps or ridges at one meter apart on row. Experts say it ...

Lagos: Vision and capacity to attain next level

Image
http://ift.tt/2qGzmRZ Agbaje His defining moment came when he was sworn in as the 4th democratically elected governor of Nigeria’s Centre of Excellence and Africa’s commercial hub, Lagos State. That was precisely on May 29, 2015 after the two-horse, riveting race between him, the gubernatorial flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). A lot of water, as the wise ones say, has gone under the bridge ever since. But this piece is not all about his modest achievements within a short span of two years, across the spectrum of security, massive infrastructural outlay, agriculture, education, transportation, healthcare delivery, human capacity development and of course, entertainment and tourism. No. Rather, it is a personal perception about the distinguished gentleman who Fate brought me in contact with at Glover Home back in 2014.What was my first impression about him? It was that of a well-groomed, complete gentleman whose...

NPA’s unaudited accounts stall release of 7% surcharge for port development

Image
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J By Godwin Oritse THE 2016 unaudited accounts of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) is currently stalling the release of the 7.0 percent surcharge paid on imports for the development of the ports. Disclosing this in Lagos, the Managing Director of the authority, Ms. Hadiza Bala Usman, said that the account of the agency was last audited in 2015 adding that the 2016 audit was yet to be done. Usman who was responding to queries on the port issues by protesting customs agents and truckers in Lagos, said that access to the fund was tied to the updated audit of the account of the authority. Noting that on resumption of duties at the NPA, she discovered that the accounts of the ports authority has not been audited for three years, Usman said she has ordered an immediate audit of the outstanding accounts from 2014. The surcharge for port development is domiciled at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) with balances said to be in several billions of Naira over a period of...
