The incident happened as intense fighting between the Boko Haram insurgents and the Nigerian Military Forces went on in Borno State. Locals  said that the explosion occurred at about 7 pm local time as residents  were about to break their Ramadan fast.  A loud blast boomed, forcing dwellers of the suburbs at the outskirts of the town to flee for safety. The apex court, in a ruling by a five-man panel of Justices, dismissed Metuh’s appeal for want of merit. The lead ruling which was prepared by Justice Clara Ogunbiyi, gave the Federal High Court in Abuja the nod to continue Metuh’s trial. The embattled former PDP spokesman had in the dismissed appeal, challenged refusal of Justice Okon Abang to hands-off his trial. Y. E. Dirisu, in a case argued by his counsel, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN). Plaintiffs in the case, led by Chief Joseph Imanobe and 19 others, had sued the paramount ruler, accusing him of attempting or having the intention of altering the two ruling houses of Ogute and Oteku. It was gathered that while Ogute are Ogute-Oke, Awuyemi, Imiekuri and Imiegeli branches, Oteku comprises Komunio and Iddo. The plaintiffs had contended that the Okuokpellagbe had altered the Chieftaincy Declaration, which recognises only two ruling houses, by distributing amenities in such a way that suggests there were more than two ruling houses to the near exclusion of others.
