Image
http://ift.tt/2rDkcwx Akinbode Oluwafemi The Environmental Rights Action/ Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN) has expressed concerns over delays in implementing the National Tobacco Control Law and attempts by companies to frustrate the enforcement of appropriate laws, as well as the exploitation of farmers in the Southwest. In this interview with EDU ABADE, Deputy Executive Director of ERA/FoEN, Oluwafemi Akinbode, provides insights into the challenges posed by the tobacco industry and the threats to pro-health, public interest laws in the country. May this year marked two years since the National Tobacco Control Act (NTCA) became law. Why is the issue of implementing the regulations still a challenge? It took almost a decade for Nigeria to have a supposedly comprehensive National Tobacco Control Act (NTCA). That law itself has some limitations. But we have a law that one can use to reduce smoking influence in our country and check the onslaught that the tobacco industry has...

Hooray for… Kumawood! Ghana’s fastest filmmakers

Image
http://ift.tt/2r8aQp4 The cultural heart of Ghana is about five hours' drive from the more cosmopolitan coastal capital, Accra, and it was rivalry between the two that played a key role in developing Kumasi's burgeoning film industry. India has its Bollywood and Nigeria, Nollywood. Even New Zealand has a Wellywood. In Ghana, films made in Kumasi and the surrounding region go by a similar shorthand — Kumawood. The cultural heart of Ghana is about five hours’ drive from the more cosmopolitan coastal capital, Accra, and it was rivalry between the two that played a key role in developing Kumasi’s burgeoning film industry. Smarting from a jibe nearly a decade ago, Kumawood defiantly built itself up after a teasing by Accra-based counterparts about not being real filmmakers, producer James Aboagye said. “At that time, the only producer in Kumasi here said that if this is the way they are treating us, then we will stay in Kumasi and create Kumawood,” he told AFP. And so i...

What obviously provoked the rage of the northern youths were the ceaseless agitations for self-determination by some indigenes of the south east. Absolute surrender to the King – Part 1

Image
http://ift.tt/2qDa9aE Pastor W. F. Kumuyi The story of Absalom, who rebelled against David his father, God’s appointed and anointed king in Israel, is as instructive today and it was in the days when this incident took place. Dethroned by his son, David had to run for his life, family and people, to avoid bloodshed. Though a rival and reprobate had risen up to take his place, some of his subjects, who still recognised him as the anointed king, followed and expressed their commitment to him, saying, “Behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall appoint” (2 Samuel 15:15). In this hard time of great disappointment, discouragement and distress, David rejoiced to find some loyal servants, who pledged their allegiance to him. All believers also have a King. We recognise Jesus, the anointed One and Christ as our King, even though Israel rejected Him, Judas betrayed Him and the Antichrist would seek to usurp His authority. Our surrender and allegiance to Christ m...

Partaking of Christ’s nature

Image
http://ift.tt/2qDkq6F II Peter: 4 states that we are partakers of the divine nature through the knowledge and power of God and Christ. Partaking of the divine nature has been described in different ways. Some attribute partaking of Christ’s nature to the celebration of the Eucharist during the sacrament of Holy Communion. Moreover, Jesus told Peter just before the crucifixion, at the Last Supper, that if he did not let Him wash him, he would have no part in Him. (John 13:8). The most common explanation within the Church of partaking of Christ’s nature is being born again. Jesus told Nicodemus (John 3:7), that in order to be saved and gain eternal life, he must be born again. Jesus then elaborated by saying that being born again is not a physical phenomenon or one-time act, but requires being born of the Spirit. Partaking of the divine nature of being born again involves a moment-by-moment consecration to Christ, even though many individuals identify a special, specific experience o...

True pastoral calling and ministry

Image
http://ift.tt/2nQBzK6 Dr. Francis Akin-John The pastoral gift and calling is one of the most important gifts to the health of the Church. Pastoral calling is crucial to the perpetuation of the gospel in the world. However, the pastoral ministry has become a laughing stock in the society today, due to compromise on the part of Church leaders. Too many things are happening that had and are still undermining the pastoral ministry. Today, every Dick, Tom, Harry and Jerry answers the name ‘Pastor’ and majority is ignorant of the functions of pastoral ministry. Unwholesome Ways of Becoming Pastors Today. John 10:11-15 When Church leaders and people are using the following ways to choose, become, ordain and install pastors over Churches, many of our Churches are suffering the ripple effect of increased divorce, scandals, moral failures, stagnation, spiritual bankruptcy and public ridicule of the pastoral ministry today: • Having served in Church committee and deciding to become a pasto...
