Senate passes Witness Protection Bill

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The Senate on Thursday passed the Witness Protection Bill to enable persons receive protection in relation to information and evidence rendered to law enforcement agencies during investigation. The bill, sponsored by late Sen. Isiaka Adeleke (APC-Osun), was passed after consideration of report on it by the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters at plenary. Presenting the report, Chairman of the committee, Sen. David Umaru, said that the practice that informed the bill was universally accepted. According to him, it is for the protection of witnesses willing to provide information and evidence for the purpose of enhancing a justice system and whose lives may be threatened as a result of it. “The legislation will give impetus and credence to the current anti-corruption drive of this administration. Niger Govt. to ban trucks plying state-owned roads

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The Niger Government says it will ban heavy duty trucks from plying major state-owned roads in order prolong their lifespan. Mr Jonathan Vatsa, the state Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, said this at a news conference  at Government House, Minna, on Thursday. Vatsa said that the government was spending huge sums of money to maintain the roads. However, he did not say when the policy would become effective. “We are going to block our own roads because we are spending a lot of money maintaining them. “Right now, we are meeting with the Etsu Nupe, trailer and tanker drivers’ unions and other stakeholders to inform them of the new development.’’ The commissioner said that the measure would not be extended to federal roads in the state. recalls that a bridge at Kata-Eregi village in Katcha Local Government Area of the state collapsed recently. Oshodi violence: Lagos suspends NURTW activities indefinitely

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Following the violence that led to the death of a leader of Motorcycle Operators’ Association of Lagos State (MOALS) in Oshodi, Alhaji Rasaq Bello popularly known as Hamburger, the State Government on Monday suspended activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in all the seven branches in the area indefinitely. The affected branches are LOB A, LOB D, LOB J, Oshodi A, Oshodi B, Oshodi C and Oshodi D. The State Government, in a news conference jointly addressed by officials of the State, the police and NURTW at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, said while the suspension order lasts, there would be no collection of tickets/fees from commuter buses operating in the area.
