Prerogative of mercy: Lagos orders release of 18 Kirikiri inmates

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The Lagos State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy on Thursday handed over an order to the Nigerian Prisons Service for the immediate release of 18 inmates serving life sentences at the Kirikiri Maximum Prison. The order was handed over to the Service through the State’s Controller of Prisons, Mr Olatunbosun Ladipo. The 18 inmates, who included 15 male and 3 females serving life sentences for various offences, and having spent more than 30 years in incarceration, were recommended for immediate release by the Council on compassionate grounds. The inmates were ordered to be released having been found to have fulfilled the very stringent conditions for their freedom. IPI endorses Nigeria to host 2018 World Congress – Shehu

Malam Garba Shehu, a member of the congress planning committee, made the disclosure on Saturday in Abuja in a statement issued to newsmen. Shehu, who is also the SSA to the President on Media and Publicity, said the endorsement followed the successful bid by the Nigerian chapter of the IPI. He said that Nigeria’s bid to host the congress was championed by Kabiru Yusuf, who chairs the Nigerian chapter of IPI and Malam Isma’ila Isa. The 82 rescued Chibok school girls have been reunited with their parents on Saturday in Abuja in an emotion-laden occasion.Mr Joe Mutah, the Chief Press Secretary to the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja. Mutah said that the girls were earlier reunited with 24 others, who were rescued by the Federal Government last year. He said the Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Jummai Alhassan, disclosed at the event that a group of experts had been put together to address the girls’ psycho-social support and medical needs.
