Breaking: Explosion at Indian firecracker factory kills 20

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J An explosion at a fireworks factory in central India on Wednesday killed 20 workers and injured 10 others, some with serious burns, an official said. Dozens of employees managed to escape unhurt but firefighters spent two hours bringing the major blaze under control in Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh state. “A total of 20 charred bodies have been pulled out of the factory,” local administrative chief Bharat Yadav told AFP from the accident site. “The rescue operation is over now, we have cleared the place and thankfully no one is trapped inside,” he added. Yadav said it was unclear what caused the blast, but suspected a worker may have callously tossed a burning beedi (a local type of cigarette) inside. “What exactly triggered the fire is not yet known. It is possible that someone might have thrown a burning beedi,” he told the Press Trust of India. 29m Nigerians jobless as unemployment rate rises to 14.2 % in Q4

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said the unemployment rate in the country rose from 13.9 per cent in the 3 rd quarter to 14.2 per cent in the 4 th quarter of 2016. The NBS made this known in the “Unemployment/Under-employment Report for 4 th Quarter of 2016’’ made available on the bureau’s website on Tuesday in Abuja. The report said that the period under review showed that the population of unemployed was 27.12 million in 3rd quarter, compared to 28.58 million persons in the 4 th quarter. It said that this showed an increase in the number of unemployed labour force by 351,015 persons. According to the bureau, the percentage increase in both the 2 nd  and 1 st quarter of 2016 were slightly lower at 13.4 per cent and 12.1 per cent, respectively. It showed that 26.06 million persons were unemployed in 2nd quarter and while 24.5 million were unemployed in the 1st quarter in the year under review. Turkey has 145 media workers in jail, according to the European Federation of Journalists. Among them is Deniz Yucel, a German working for Die Welt newspaper who was arrested in February. The bill, which was passed after the House considered its features at the Committee of the Whole, was sponsored by Aishat lbrahim (APC–Ilorin East). The bill, if assented to, would further protect the rights of physically challenged persons in the state and give them more opportunities. The Speaker, Dr Ali Ahmad, directed the Clerk of the House, Alhaji Muhammed Katsina, to produce a clean copy of the bill for Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed’s assent. During Wednesday’s plenary, the Kwara Revenue Court Amendment Bill and the Revenue Administration Bill also passed second reading. Shareholders berate SEC over dissolution of Ikeja Hotels board

Mr Godwin Anono, Chairman, Nigeria Professional Shareholders Association, said that the disolution of the board by SEC was late in coming, stressing that the infighting among the board members had been there for too long.
