TETFUND spent N7bn in Usman Danfodiyo Varsity, Sokoto, in 7 years –ES
Sokoto, June 10, 2017 (NAN) Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) spent N7 billion for projects execution and man power development in Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, from 2011 to date, Dr Abdullahi Baffa, the Executive Secretary of the fund, has said.
Baffa made the disclosure on Saturday in Sokoto when he inaugurated the Centre For Advanced Medical Research and Training (CAMRET) worth N300 million at the University Teaching Hospital.
He said the projects were executed at the two campuses of the university, as well as the teaching hospital.
He enumerated some of the projects to include, the centres of Urology and Nephrology, centre for research in physical sciences, video conferencing centres, as well as extension of fibre optic cables for internet, among others.
He said that some staffs of the institution were sponsored to attend various conferences within and outside Nigeria.
He added that others were sponsored for post graduate studies within and outside Nigeria.
Baffa said: ‘’The fund places high premium on research and development and will not relent in this direction.
‘’The federal government is very much concerned about improving access to quality education, as well as medical education in particular.
‘’The fund will continue to do everything humanly possible to make public tertiary educational institutions in Nigeria meet global competitiveness.’’
Baffa said the fund is currently providing interventions in 202 public institutions in thirteen intervention lines.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council of the university, Justice Pearl Enejere (rtd), commended the fund for contributing to the development and growth of tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Abdullahi Zuru, also lauded TETFUND for assisting tertiary institutions in Nigeria to upgrade their facilities and in the area of man power development.
”Without TETFUND, we might have probably packed our loads and seek for other jobs elsewhere.
”Public tertiary institutions in Nigeria owe a lot to TETFUND and we are appreciative of this,’’ Zuru added, and commended the federal government for funding universities. (NAN)
